California voters approve new US House map to boost Democrats in 2026

Source: AP

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California voters approved new congressional district boundaries Tuesday, delivering a victory for Democrats in the state-by-state redistricting battle that will help determine which party wins control of the U.S. House in 2026 and, with it, the power to thwart or advance President Donald Trump’s agenda.

The approval of Proposition 50 gives Democrats a shot at winning as many as five additional seats, just enough to blunt Texas Republicans’ move to redraw their own maps to pick up five GOP seats at Trump’s urging. Texas’ move and California’s response have kicked off a flurry of redistricting efforts around the country, with Republican states appearing to have an edge. Deeply blue California is Democrats’ best opportunity to make up seats.

Midterm elections typically punish the party in the White House, and Trump is fighting to maintain his party’s slim House majority. Republicans hold 219 seats to Democrats’ 213.

Tuesday’s results mark a political victory for Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who cast the measure as an essential tool to fight back against Trump and protect American democracy.

You did it! You made this happen. It's going to go even better in 2026 so we need to keep our heads up and keep our eyes on the prize.

is still around? I hope so too

This is about democracy, and it's clear that there are people out there who were krasnov voters until very recently. republicans who have paid enough attention to what is really happening as opposed to the propaganda they're being incessantly fed and realizing that when they get to the voting booth, they don't have to just look at the Rs to figure out who and what to vote for.

I'm exhausted because I worked the election for over 15 hours yesterday in Durham NC and we processed more votes yesterday than we did in Nov 2024. I am happy and hopeful this morning.

My home state California did the right thing. Orange County and San Diego voted for 50. OC is red. or did it just used to be?

These big wins add energy to #TheOpposition and make possible the goal to #SaveDemocracy.

I'm going back to bed now. To anyone considering working your local elections, please do it! It's hard and pays little to nothing but it's IMPORTANT. I'm 70. I was not the youngest person working yesterday, nor the oldest. The youngest is 63. There were only 6 of us in total.

Got to say that's a small thing to be offended about. Of course it was helpful Bernardo.

...here in Texas, however, Gov A Butt called a Special Legislative Session and had all the crony Republicans pass it. The voters didn't have a chance. Hmm....which is more "democratic?"

on a 1 item ballot is what really sent a message. They could easily have voted by mail, but made a strong statement by showing up at the polls on person.

Texas redistricting because 1 rich man demands it. California redistricting because 5 million people demand it.
