Trump gives Hungary one-year exemption from Russian energy sanctions

Source: BBC

Donald Trump has exempted Hungary from sanctions over its continued purchases of Russian oil and gas for one year, a White House official has confirmed to BBC News.

Earlier, the US president said he would consider an opt-out for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a close Trump ally who has maintained good relations with Russia throughout the Ukraine war.

Speaking on Friday during Orban's visit to the White House, Trump said an exemption was under consideration because "it's very difficult for him [Orban] to get the oil and gas from other areas".

It comes after the US effectively blacklisted two of Russia's largest oil companies last month, threatening sanctions on those who buy from them.

Because sanctions are first about hurting enemies and helping cronies, and then, only if it's convenient, being consistent with the rest of your policy.

Now their fascist President is asking our fascist President to please allow the ex-KGB klepto-despot to deliver energy without sanctions. I wonder how the party of Reagan will respond...

that was still buying Russian oil. With this exception, the sanction is almost pointless.

Not to mention Hungary is a Russian ally and run by a dictator.

Trump wants to make sure that his Bestie Putin has an income source for his oil. Right now, Russia is going broke so this is a lifeline.

You know he is getting kickbacks from foreign and domestic persons who want his influence.

I wonder how much Orban gave him?

It's still not clear if Trump wants Putin to succeed or not. But Trump will like the idea of a far right authoritarian inside the EU continuing to cause problems and fly the anti-immigration flag. Like sending money to Argentina because he's pals with Milei.
