President Trump wants new Commanders stadium to be named after him

Source: NBC Sports

This one was inevitable.

Don Van Natta Jr. and Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that President Donald Trump wants the Commanders to name their forthcoming D.C. stadium after him.

The possibility was percolating throughout the political maneuvering to get the deal done. And given that he has previously demanded that the franchise “IMMEDIATELY” restore the name it abandoned more than five years ago, naming the stadium after him could be viewed as a more-than-acceptable compromise.

“That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told ESPN by email.

An unnamed White House source told ESPN that the naming of the stadium after the president “will probably happen.”

Then, on the home opener of the first season he is gone/dead, have a ceremony at halftime, centerfield, and burn all the letters. The stadium will be SRO, and they will have to broadcast it to billions around the world. Then re-name the stadium Kilmar Abrego Garcia Stadium to see how many MAGAts will stroke out.

Bald-faced bullshit!

On July 27, 2023, the United States Congress introduced the D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act, which proposed transferring control of the old RFK stadium land to the DC city government through a 99-year lease and permitting mixed-use development. The act was passed by the House of Representatives on February 28, 2024, passed by the Senate on December 21, and signed into law by president Joe Biden on January 6, 2025

In fact, in July Trump tried to block building the new stadium unless the Commanders returned to the racist "Redskins" brand.

Stadium naming rights bring in hundreds of millions of dollars now. Washington will sell their stadium naming rights for a similar figure. They'll be happy to put Trump's name on the stadium, but only if he pays them at least $35 million per year for the privilege. See post #30

Washington isn't going to bypass that huge amount of revenue (which they collect on an annual basis) for anyone. So, is Trump willing to pay $700 million over the next 20 years for his name to be on the stadium? Because that's the going rate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naming_rights

The record for the largest naming rights payment belongs to the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. On 17 November 2021, a 20-year, US$700 million sponsorship deal was reached between Anschutz Entertainment Group and Singapore-based Crypto.com to rename the Staples Center.

Or, if we look just at NFL stadiums, it would still cost him at least $400 million over 20 years.

https://doisz.com/en/blog/naming-rights-na-nfl/
Major naming rights contracts in the NFL include:
SoFi Stadium: $400 million over 20 years
Allegiant Stadium: $25 million per year
Mercedes-Benz Stadium: $324 million over 27 years

As a 70 year old Packer owner and a hardcore NFL fan, I must say I am pissed.

I don't have enough money to subscribe to all those streaming services which carry the game. Screw Amazon so no TNF.
Half the teams really suck, yet Goodell wants to expand in Europe.

Going to a game is a Thousand dollar venture. For that I can fly from Los Angeles to Green Bay, watch the game and fly home. Try that at SoFi.

Not last and not least. If you put chumps name on a stadium, he will infect it and the yard lines will be gold, along with the restrooms.

The NFL would be dead to me.

41. MaddowBlog-Trump finds something else he wants to slap his name on: a football stadium in D.C.

It’s not surprising Trump is lobbying to have a football stadium named after him; it’s surprising that it took so long for this news to reach the public.

As Trump lobbies for a football stadium to bear his name, I’m reminded of something he said six years ago at a tour of Mt. Vernon:

“If [George Washington] was smart, he would’ve put his name on it. You’ve got to put your name on stuff, or no one remembers you.” www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

Steve Benen (@stevebenen.com) 2025-11-10T20:16:22.507Z

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/trump-finds-something-else-wants-slap-name-football-stadium-dc-rcna243072

Six years later, it’s unsettling how often we’re reminded that Trump wasn’t kidding. ESPN reported over the weekend:

President Donald Trump wants the Washington Commanders to name their planned $3.7 billion stadium after him, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN. A senior White House source said there have been back-channel communications with a member of the Commanders’ ownership group, led by Josh Harris, to express Trump’s desire to have the domed stadium in the nation’s capital bear his name. The new stadium is being built on the old RFK Stadium site that served as the team’s home from 1961 to 1996.

Soon after, other news organizations published related reports, including The Associated Press and The New York Times. For its part, the White House made little effort to deny the story: Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, in response to inquiries, “That would surely be a beautiful name.”....

It’s not surprising, then, that Trump is lobbying to have a football stadium named after himself; it’s surprising that it took so long for this news to reach the public.

“You’ve got to put your name on stuff, or no one remembers you.”....

I’m not in a position to say with any confidence whether the president will get his wish on any of these fronts, but his efforts are a timely reminder to those who might’ve forgotten: Trump’s principal focus is self-aggrandizement and self-glorification, not governing.
