I got a passport last summer. You need a birth cetificate with your parents' names otherwise they
will hold your application. State issued birth certificate from the 80s wouldn't work.
Post office handled it very well. Took only a few minutes for the pic. Real ID can take a lot of time. No appointments and a line so you can wait hours I guess.
