Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) reportedly did not tell Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) she would be announcing her resignation.

Greene made the stunning announcement on Friday night, saying she would formally quit the House of Representatives on Jan. 5, 2026. The congresswoman explained she wants to avoid a “hateful primary” against her next year by a challenger-to-be-determined, supported by President Donald Trump, who withdrew his endorsement of her after she demanded his administration release the Epstein files.

“I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms,” she said. Shortly after Greene’s announcement, NBC News reporter Melanie Zanona relayed that Greene did not give Johnson advanced notice of her imminent departure from the House, which Republicans control 219 to 213.

“MTG did not give Speaker Mike Johnson a heads up about her shocking resignation, per a source with knowledge,” Zanona posted on X. “Her abrupt departure from Congress in January will make Johnson’s job even more difficult, given the GOP’s already slim margins.”

1. "razor-thin" is not the right term.

Razor thin is one or two votes. Not the 5 to 7 they had from the beginning.

22. But remember the threshold for a majority vote is "218"

which is what they mean by that term "razor-thin" in this case.

The GOP only has 219 right now (with 1 (contested) vacancy to be filled in December (TN), taking them to 220 but then a new vacancy to come in January taking them back down to 219, where MTG's seat won't be filled until February/early March at the earliest).

And with (D)s at 213, and a vacancy to be filled in December (TX), increasing to 214 (but then a new vacancy happening this past week, staying at 214 until April for the Sherrill seat special election), then the GOP can't lose more than 2 members between January - March as it would be 219 - 214.

Ultimately, assuming (D)s don't flip the TN seat, the spread will be 220 - 215, meaning (R)s can't lose more than 3.

for years...Kevin McCarthy gave her cover allowing her to become the face of the MAGA party, but once he lost his job and resigned from congress, she became a liability...

her metamorphosis from Jewish space lasers nut job to something resembling normal only occurred after the Democratic election blowout earlier this month and angry constituents condemning the shutdown..her district may me MAGA red but they are middle class and aging and rely on SNAP to feed their families and the ACA for healthcare...

Greene standing with Democrats demanding the release of the Epstein files prompted Trump to decimate her on his social platform and incite his foot soldiers to do what they do best, harass and threaten...ironically in the past, she didn't bat and eye when Democrats were in Trump's crosshairs..

make no mistake she's not done...she's tasted power and when the "heat' subsides she's going to run again, more than likely for the US Senate...oy!!

And yes, this whole thing is almost certainly because the Mango Monster refused to back he for a Senate run. I would almost guarantee she will run foe Senate. ASAP. But there are enough people outside *and even in) her district who are embarrassed by her that we still stand a good chance.

I thought she had been married and divorced like 6 or 7 times already.
I have never seen mention of any family when articles about her come out; I was under the impression she is single but has parents who are still alive. But, hey, what do I know...the only time I pay even partial attention to her is when the media mentions her latest outrage in passing.

Kemp has to call a special election, something like 10 days after she resigns, then the minimum time they have to wait to hold the election, would be 30 days after that, so per the below, they are expecting some time in March.

I know FL was a bit different where they had a primary for their special election BEFORE they had the "general" special election, when they filled Gaetz's seat after he had left. In fact, I think someone else also left FL to work for 45 or something, so they had a couple special elections.
