Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki weighed in Thursday on the discourse around Pentagon media access, calling out the new press corps for consisting of mostly conservative influencers. What is so interesting right now in Washington is what is happening with the Pentagon press corps. It actually surprised me what they did, Psaki, now a host on MS NOW, told late-night comedian Stephen Colbert in an appearance on The Late Show.
I could not get over they had the press corps, Im going to put them in quotes because it includes Laura Loomer and James OKeefe and this crew is not a real press corps. she continued later, using air quotes. So, this week has been quite a week, as you outlined in your monologue, things anyone here, anyone watching might have questions for Pete Hegseth.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has accused the media of trying to sabotage President Trumps agenda, revised press access rules in October. To obtain or renew a Pentagon pass, journalists are now required to sign a contract acknowledging that information from the Defense Department needs to be approved for public release by an official before it is reported out even if it is considered unclassified.
Most of the nations top news organizations, including Fox News and Newsmax as Psaki pointed out, declined to sign onto the new policy and have since lost access to the building. The administration instead credentialed a number of Trump-friendly figures, including many who have never covered defense or a press briefing in person before.

Yesterdayâs Pentagon âpressâ briefing was obviously absurd, but it was emblematic of a larger truth:

For Team Trump, this was the platonic ideal of how journalism should work: conservative ideologues asking conservative questions to a conservative spokesperson. www.ms.now/rachel-maddo...

One week after the correspondents exodus, Hegseths team has announced the next generation of media figures who will now cover the Defense Department, having accepted the administrations journalistic limits. On Tuesday, they participated in their first briefing.
The New York Times reported:
Kingsley Wilson, the Pentagons press secretary, approached the lectern on Tuesday morning. Welcome to the Department of War, she said. The greeting was wholly appropriate, considering that Ms. Wilson was speaking to a briefing room of people undergoing something of an orientation program this week at the Pentagon.
The event was akin to a Saturday Night Live sketch, except in this case, the caricature was real.
Former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz, Donald Trumps first choice to serve as U.S. attorney general, was among the credentialed correspondents on hand for the briefing. He was joined by assorted right-wing activists and personalities, including Laura Loomer.

.....Behind the podium was Wilson, who was described earlier this year in a Mother Jones report as an overt internet troll with a long history of bigoted, xenophobic, and deliberately provocative sposting. The Defense Department spokesperson has also been accused of touting antisemitic views and Kremlin-like statements.
On the other side of the podium was a group of Trump supporters whod agreed to cover the Pentagon on the Pentagons terms.
In other words, a press briefing featuring conservative activists asking a conservative spokesperson conservative questions. It wasnt journalism, but it was entirely in line with what the administration likes to see.
