U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas, on Monday filed to run for U.S. Senate, scrambling the Democratic field after teasing her potential entry for months.
Crockett, a second-term congresswoman, has skyrocketed to fame through viral spats with Republicans and as a frequent presence in the Democratic media ecosystem. The 44-year-olds fiery clashes with Republicans have earned her legions of social media followers and donors, turning her into one of the partys most prolific fundraisers even as she has been passed up for multiple House leadership roles.
Crockett is joining a field that already includes Austin state Rep. James Talarico, also known as a strong communicator and for his progressive brand of Christianity. But her path was made easier by fellow Dallasite Colin Allreds decision to exit the Senate race, which he announced early Monday morning. Both Allred, the 2024 Democratic nominee, and Talarico had been running for months, with Allred launching his campaign in July, followed by Talarico in September. The primary is March 3.
But as Crockett began to move closer to a bid, she called both Allred and Talarico to discuss her internal polling of the race, and the prospect of forming a slate. That did not pan out; a similar effort to divide up the marquee statewide offices over the summer also failed, with too many candidates drawn to the Senate race over other contests such as governor and attorney general. Crockett was expected to formally announce her Senate campaign at an event scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The Texas Democratic Party added her early Monday afternoon to a list of candidates who have filed for the 2026 primaries.

(6,252 posts)Rep. Crockett is a dynamic firebrand with great grasp of rhetorical tools, but can go one on one in regards to policy without batting an eyelash.

(3,987 posts)Crockett could well win the primary. But I agree that her entry into the race boosts Republican chances of winning the race in November.
Why? She is a fighter, which primary voters long for although Talarico is far from a wimp. Their styles are very different.
But her fighting style is very partisan and edgy. General election voters are likely to find her harsh and unlikeable.
Talarico is very likable. He rightly fights the billionaire class, but he is never ugly in his remarks. Plus no one can refute the Christian right like he can. Talarico can get bipartisan support that she will not be able to get. I hope he beats her anyway, but primary voters of both parties tend to be the most partisan voters. It takes a lot of work to research candidates and vote in a primary whereas in the general election you can go with the party of the candidates. In 2022, if I remember correctly, only about 7% of Texas Dems voted in the primary statewide.

(13,995 posts)I don't foresee more crossover than that for Rep. Crockett...if that much.
Republicans have a big problem with assertive women of color, and Texas is just too full of goddamned Republicans.

(3,987 posts)candidate like Trump, I'm pretty sure that's the ceiling.
Crockett is not likely to attract any significant crossover vote. Talarico would, I am quite sure, but he'd have to win in the primary which has become much harder with Crockett's entry into the race. If he does survive the primary, I think he could actually pull off an upset and defeat the Republican, especially if Ken Paxton beat Cornyn in the primary.

All those red counties don't matter when the blue cities are voting BLUE.
Come on Jasmine Crockett, this could be the one!

(4,129 posts)Both will fight for working people, but they have such a different style of communicating. I think Jasmine Crockett speaks the way most of us want our reps to speak, but Talarico can get Christians to take the cotton from their ears. I just hope they don't have a nasty primary.

(16,888 posts)Democrats can be so stupid sometimes. Yes, I said that. The strategy is just bad. Talarico has already been out there and is getting some recognition and interest. Now, that recognition and interest will be divided to the betterment of the Republicans.
She should have waited. She's young and she has time. Maybe she should have run for governor.
Lifelong Texan here, and I know how it works.

(4,129 posts)redistricting. Of course, that was intentional. Rethugs are scared to death of her. They are both young and will live to fight other political races. One way or another, Dems will end up with a formidable candidate. Both have a good chance of winning.

(16,888 posts)I think it will be such a nice contrast if Talarico and Crockett can be civil and have discussions rather than attacking one another. That would be a nice change for the political climate.
That said, I don't believe that Crockett would have a chance in hell of defeating Cornyn. Her gender and the color of her skin. That makes me sad to admit because I wish my beloved Texas would do better. But it is the sad reality that we live in here. If something could change that, I would be the biggest cheerleader.
Talarico has gotten some attention and he is smart and deft on his feet. He can come back at them over the religion like no one else. The uphill battle is going to be, of course, that Cornyn is the established candidate and Paxton is the MAGA. Again, nothing would make me happier than if Texas were to surprise me.

(16,888 posts)I would like to hope that Texans have figured that out. He realized he had pissed Trump off, and he's been ass-kissing the orange idiot ever since. It's really sickening to see a grown man Senator groveling and almost begging to be let back into the club.

(3,490 posts)We fighters like her not middle of the road people. I f we have learned nothing else over the years we should know by now that moral suasion doesn't work. She isn't afraid to make some noise and has the wit to go toe to toe with anyone. I'm a little turned off by Talarico's religiosity and I don't know if he has the chops to get mean and nasty enough to win in Texas politics. Old Cornpone has got old and lazy but he's still a smart and mean snake. And I am sick and tired of the "wait your turn" bullshit. Beto came close against Cruz and he comes from here in El Paso, which is like the outland. We are closer to the capitals of Chihuahua, Arizona, and New Mexico than our own. Being from Dallas is a big plus when it comes to driving voter turnout. Big cities have a lot of synergy. Anyway, i am glad she's in because it won't be the same old boring shit. We need to attack. The best defense is a good offense.

(4,129 posts)This is Texas. If you think a black woman (an amazing, STELLAR candidate) has a better chance of winning than a white Christian man who merely has a softer way of addressing injustices and hypocrisy, then I don't think you understand this state very well. I think they have an equal chance of winning. A lot of people here know Texans have been getting shafted for the 30 years Rethugs have been in charge. But many of those same people will have difficulty voting for black woman because they are scared of them. It's outrageous, but it's true. Those same people have also been brainwashed to believe that Dems are crazy radicals. Talarico is nothing if not sane and the calm way he presents his case will allow people to hear that the policies Democrats are advocating are sound and based on common sense. His authentic Christian values will help people realize they have more in common with Dem values than they've been led to believe. I'm not arguing for either candidate--I love them both and I have no idea who will win. Like you, I wish we didn't have to make this kind of choice, especially right now. But that's the way the Rethugs in Austin planned it.

(3,490 posts)Like Tim Dunn, the great Christian who owns the Texas senate and Kenny Boy Paxton who God gives bribes and affairs. And just because the R's are racist and misogynist doesn't mean we are. If I wasn't so polite I would ask the door knocking evangelists if prayer works on diarrhea. As a matter of fact you calling this old man with degrees who has worked on state wide campaigns and in Texas and other states ignorant is a good example of "Authentic Christian Values".
Trueblue Texan
(4,129 posts)For another, if all people who professed to be Christians actually followed the teachings of Christ there would be a lot less trouble in this world. Finally, who called anyone ignorant? We have a difference of opinion. That doesn't mean anyone is calling anyone ignorant. And btw, the so-called Christians you mentioned are exactly the type of "Christians" that turn people away from the faith. They are definitely not Christians.

(1,077 posts)I think, and I know how this might sound, a woman of color is going to have a tough road to walk for that Senate seat in the State of Texas.
Talarico is good on his feet, smart and has charisma.
But being an atheist, I am strongly opposed to having another Christian in Congress.
White Christian Nationalism is very much on the rise in our country and needs to be forcefully opposed.
Can Talarico hold the line for our party when its crunch time? I have serious doubts about that. He will choose whats best for his faith FIRST and the rights of EVERY citizen in our country second.
Im an Allred supporter, but he made a smart decision to campaign for a different office.
Talarico always invoking his faith when speaking causes me to sigh and roll my eyes.
How will he vote if the Dems decide to codify the right to have an abortion? Keeping the Ten Commandments out of the public square? Will he support public ed or will he vote to give $ to religious and charter schools?
I want to us to win. Weve got to win.
And I dont want to hear any mess about purity tests for our candidates.
But there are some things that are too much.
Ill send Jasmine $ for the primary. And well see what happens.
Hitchens: Religion poisons everything.
And I want religion out of politics.
Thats what best for our country and The Founders thought so too.

(4,129 posts)I have listened to the man's background and he has a deep commitment to the first amendment and the Constitution as a whole. He doesn't have the bullshit Christian faith that is really just opportunism that so many have these days. I also am an atheist, but I'm not going to hold it against someone (or at least I try not to) for professing their faith. I pay more attention to actions than words. Talarico walks his faith in the Constitution--that's all I care about. But I love Jasmine Crockett too. No doubt, she is also a Christian. I have no idea who'll I support, but in the general, I'll support the Dem candidate, no matter who. I'm just grateful we are assured to have a kick-ass Dem candidate. Both are remarkable.
