Former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper got another good sign as he campaigns to flip a Republican-held Senate seat in his state, with a new poll showing more voters support a Democrat in the race compared to a GOP candidate.
"A Democrat has not won statewide federal office in North Carolina in nearly two decades and we know this race will be very close, which is why were building a campaign to earn every vote and make sure North Carolinians know that Roy Cooper will fight for them in the Senate," Jeff Allen, Cooper's campaign manger, told Newsweek in an emailed statement on Monday. Newsweek reached out GOP hopeful Michael Whatley's campaign via email for comment.
Why It Matters
North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican, is not seeking another term in the 2026 midterm election, leaving a wide-open race in the key swing state.
Cooper served two terms as governor of the state and was viewed favorably by many North Carolina voters throughout his tenure. Democrats are hoping to flip the Senate seat with a popular candidate who has already won statewide in previous elections; however, the state hasn't elected a Democratic senator since 2008.
