Indiana governor says he'll help primary Republicans who defied Trump on redistricting

Source: The Hill

12/12/25 9:10 AM ET

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun (R ) on Thursday said he would help President Trump primary Republican state lawmakers who voted against a redistricting measure backed by the leader.

“I am very disappointed that a small group of misguided State Senators have partnered with Democrats to reject this opportunity to protect Hoosiers with fair maps and to reject the leadership of President Trump. Ultimately, decisions like this carry political consequences,” Braun wrote in a post on the social platform X. ‘I will be working with the President to challenge these people who do not represent the best interests of Hoosiers,” he added.

In a 19-31 vote, the Indiana Senate rejected the redistricting bid, with more Republicans voting against the new map than for it. “We’ll be launching primary challenges against every last traitor who voted no, effective immediately! Pack your bags, your time is up!” Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz wrote on the social platform X, responding to the vote. Republicans lawmakers in the Hoosier State who opposed the effort have defended their decision to buck Trump.

“Make no mistake, I, like many of those who will join me in voting no today, are constitutional fiscal and religious conservatives. What that means to me is that I believe in conserving the values, the culture and the institutions that created American exceptionalism,” said Indiana state Sen. Spencer Deery (R), who voted against the map.

That's over 3/5ths of the state Senate!

The 45 wing of the party has thrown those "standard" GOP concepts under the bus.

They’ve shrieked this nonsense every time they don’t get their way or one of their cabal steps out of line. Their threats are getting tired and probably wouldn’t work anyway. Call a Wambulance.

A strong democratic challenger and an irate electorate are more likely to cause them trouble.

There have been many reports of coercion and threats to safety including families, just like the Viet Cong or the Mafia.

BRDS, in one of your recent posts you said the US will fall. What do you think is most likely going to happen?

I think you are the most informed person I know. I value your thoughts and your DU posts.

May we rise!

The irony here with what you are referring to, which is what Justice Sotomayor was trying warn about, was the 1935 SCOTUS decision - Humphrey's Executor v. United States

Facts of the case

President Hoover appointed, and the Senate confirmed, Humphrey as a commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). In 1933, President Roosevelt asked for Humphrey's resignation since the latter was a conservative and had jurisdiction over many of Roosevelt's New Deal policies. When Humphrey refused to resign, Roosevelt fired him because of his policy positions. However, the FTC Act only allowed a president to remove a commissioner for "inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office." Since Humphrey died shortly after being dismissed, his executor sued to recover Humphrey's lost salary.

Question

Did section 1 of the Federal Trade Commission Act unconstitutionally interfere with the executive power of the President?

Conclusion

The unanimous Court found that the FTC Act was constitutional and that Humphrey's dismissal on policy grounds was unjustified.

(snip)

I.e., this was a ruling AGAINST a DEMOCRAT for firing one of Hoover's appointees "without cause" based on how the FTC law was written.

We are now at a point where the SCOTUS may upend that - in the short term, by STILL supporting the REPUBLICAN.

But the danger is that certain functions MUST BE "independent", otherwise the potential exists for even more rampant rubber-stamping of what many might consider "illegal actions". And if you have your highest court "compromised" by rabid partisanship, then this will probably lead to some states completely ignoring what is going on at the federal level and forming their own "confederacies" (you see that with the medical guidance and states rejecting what the federal guidelines are, and instead relying on their own). I essence, the whole thing starts to fall apart.

The SCOTUS 6 needs to turn this off-course ship around and start reigning 45 in NOW.

Flim Flam Man's threats are, just like his head, hollow, the vote in the Indiana Senate is proof positive that his control of the repig party is just an illusion, more and more repigs are defying him and he doesn't know how to handle it except to bluster and make threats.

Can't hardly wait for 2026 and 2028.

Oh, and Gov. Braun, go fuck yourself with razor wire.

It was 62% - 38% against!

Nor are the GOPers who defied Trump a bunch of altruists. They assessed the mood in their districts and determined that people didn't want this. Bottom line.

I'd bet 20% know who their fed reps are and a little more than half know who the governor is lol. This state is infested with fuck the government people know matter which way they lean. It doesn't work so they don't care. The repukes have poisoned politics to that point in this state.
