SAN FRANCISCO - A decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Friday will bar the deployment of the California National Guard in Los Angelesfor now, according to the attorney general's office.
The Ninth Circuits decision means that, come Monday, there will be no National Guard troops deployed in California. Let me repeat: For the first time in six months, there will be no military deployed on the streets of Los Angeles, said California Attorney General Rob Bonta in a news release.
The Ninth Circuit issued a partial administrative stay in the ongoing court battle between California leaders and President Donald Trump over control of the state's National Guard troops. The attorney general's office explained that the stay means the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Californias order barring the deployment of California National Guard troops in Los Angeles will remain in effect for now.
However, the stay also pauses the second part of the order, returning federalized California National Guard troops to Gov. Gavin Newsom's command. "While this decision is not final, it is a gratifying and hard-fought step in the right direction," Bonta said. "There is no crisis to justify the National Guards continued presence, and we look forward to continuing to prove that in court.
