U.S. troops have been in Syria for about a decade, starting with airstrikes against ISIS in September 2014, followed by small deployments of special forces working with local partners (SDF) to fight ISIS in the north and east, with a continuous presence supporting counter-ISIS efforts and guarding areas like the Tanf garrison, though troop numbers fluctuate. Other nations like Russia, Iran (Hezbollah), and Turkey also have forces in Syria, involved in various aspects of the ongoing civil conflict and counter-terrorism efforts since the war began around 2011.

A gunman from the Islamic State attacked an American delegation in Palmyra, Syria, killing two U.S. Army soldiers and an American civilian interpreter today, leaving several people injured.

Three other American service members were injured in the attack, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. A single member of ISIS attacked the American delegation while it was in Palmyra for a “key leader engagement,” according to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell in a statement on X. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said that the gunman was killed by “partner forces.”

As per Department of Defense policy, the Pentagon is not identifying or releasing the names of those killed until 24 hours after their next of kin are informed.

And does Ahmed al-Sharaa need help in achieving it?

Since taking power, al-Sharaa has positioned Syria as a partner against ISIS.

Joining the Anti-ISIS Coalition: In November 2025, Syria officially joined the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.

Counterterrorism Cooperation: Al-Sharaa has met with international leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, to coordinate efforts to eliminate ISIS remnants and prevent the group's resurgence.

Domestic Crackdowns: Under his leadership, the interim government has conducted raids and detained dozens of alleged ISIS members to demonstrate its commitment to regional stability.

Does a choice between Syrian nationalism versus a regional Islamic caliphate have any relevance to the People of the U.S.?

And, as always regarding events in the middle east, Does the existence of Israel have any relevance to the People of the U.S.?

The U.S. still has around a thousand troops deployed in eastern Syria as part of a coalition fighting the Islamic State group.

“Last month, Syria joined the international coalition fighting against the IS as Damascus improves its relations with Western countries following last year’s fall of President Bashar Assad when insurgents captured his seat of power in Damascus,” the wire service added.

Nearly two dozen House and Senate Republicans on Thursday called for President Joe Biden to resign or be removed over a terrorist attack in Kabul that killed at least a dozen U.S. service members, as tensions between Biden and Republicans in Congress have worsened amid the U.S. withdrawal of troops from the region.

(CBS4) - Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert announced on Friday, Sept. 24, she introduced articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. She says the administration failed "to ensure the national security of the United States and its citizens" with regard to the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Yeah, I don't think so either
