WASHINGTON ‒ President Donald Trump has taken action classifying fentanyl as a "weapon of mass destruction" as his administration escalates efforts to combat the flow of illicit drugs into the United States. Trump signed an executive order on Monday, Dec. 15, to formalize the designation, which comes as the president has signed off on unprecedented airstrikes on alleged drug-carrying boats in the Caribbean from Venezuela.

"No bomb does what this is doing," Trump said in remarks from the Oval Office, pointing to overdose deaths caused by fentanyl in the United States. "So we're formally classifying fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction."

5. So what the hell happens to medical fentanyl? Admittedly, even the emergency clinics/ERs I work try to avoid it

but there are uses that mandate it--intractable pain. Sometimes Morphine, Dilaudid (hydromorphone), Demerol, etc just don't cut it--the horrific pain of the most severe Sickle Cell crisis for one example.

And in answer to my subject line, I don't think this can impact medical use: The prior HALT act reclassified it, but it is certainly still in use and I don't know how this moron can unilaterally block all medical use. But, we shall see.

Many have pointed out the legitimate medical use of fentanyl; but USA Today gets through a reasonably long article without once mentioning that, or querying what this "classification by presidential order" might do to this medical use.
