A growing number of Republican lawmakers are growing dissatisfied with the ever-increasing power of the executive branch under President Donald Trump and are hoping to reclaim some of Congress authority starting next month, The Hill reported Saturday.
Ive been concerned for ten years about that, said Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on the growing power of the executive branch, and the corresponding relinquishing of power by the legislative branch, speaking with The Hill. I dont know that its getting any better. Seems to be getting worse.
Trump has strengthened the power of the executive branch of government significantly during his first year back in the White House, clawing back spending already appropriated by lawmakers, declaring national emergencies to circumvent Congress, and asserting control over independent agencies, and in some cases, with the backing of the Supreme Court.
Democratic lawmakers have been nearly unanimous in opposing the Trump administrations consolidation of power, but as Trumps second term approaches its first year, a growing number of Republicans are also saying they want to reclaim Congresss authority as well. Its really important. Its about the power of the purse. Its about us determining what gets funded and what doesnt get funded. Its setting priorities, said Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND), speaking with The Hill. Januarys going to be a big month.
