More than 100 people were in the bar at the time of the explosion, Swiss media outlet Blick is reporting, citing a police spokesperson.

As a reminder, police have told us that "several" people have been killed - but we don't have a precise number.

Several dozen people were killed and at least 100 injured when a fire broke out during a New Year’s celebration at a bar in southwest Switzerland, police said Thursday.

The fire at Le Constellation in Crans-Montana, in the heart of the Swiss Alps, occurred at 1:30 a.m., police said during a news conference

It's a very common horror story -- too much flammable stuff in a public space with inadequate exits.

Switzerland is known for its intense regulatory environment. Everything must be in its proper place and don't walk on the grass. That's one reason this was first reported as a possible terrorist attack.

Sadly, like anywhere else and for various reasons -- from ignorance to negligence to overt corruption -- dangerous situations are not corrected before tragedy strikes.
