U.S. rolls out new dietary guidelines backing more protein and full-fat dairy

Source: NBC News

By Berkeley Lovelace Jr.

The Trump administration released updated U.S. dietary guidelines Wednesday, encouraging Americans to eat more protein and full-fat dairy, while cutting back on ultra-processed foods and added sugars.

The guidelines — which are updated every five years by the Agriculture and Health and Human Services departments — largely align with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” movement, but stop short of the sweeping changes some nutrition experts had expected.

Gone is the MyPlate visual guide for what foods to eat — which recommended filling your plate with roughly equal parts grains, vegetables, protein and fruit with a small portion of dairy.

Instead, an updated version of the food pyramid is back, this time inverted and slightly jumbled. Protein, dairy and healthy fats, along with vegetables and fruits dominate; whole grains are de-emphasized.

I pretty much agree with this. It's what I've been trying to do myself.

Time to buy that new mansion on this news...$$$

And, no, within reason, I do not deny the importance of increased lean meat or vegetarian-sourced protein in many Americans' diets. That said, the new fad is starting now, with protein added to EVERYTHING, just as fiber was added over the last couple of years, and (supposed) pro/pre/post-biotics more recently, despite little evidence they were effective over cultured real foods. Ditto the artificially sweetened foods that are now shown to be so problematic.

Fat is more complicated and neither ultra low-fat diets, nor those packed with unlimited saturated fat are going to do anything more than ensure health problems and an early death. Monosaturated fats as present in the Mediterranean diet are conversely appropriate to emphasize.

I do agree with the attempt to reduce processed foods in the diet, so I guess there is that. Deemphasizing ACTUAL whole grains (over the crap labeled in recent years as such which was anything but) is foolish. Ditto healthy seeds and nuts in moderation. Obviously, an emphasis on fruits and vegetables is appropriate.

So, a lot of half-baked recommendations among some that are increasingly important...

Even if they say that, vegetarians know better. (Ask Sir Paul McCartney.)

That said, RFK Jr wants to emphasize meat-sourced protein which he eats continuously throughout the day (as confirmed by Cheryl Hines who notes he makes her carry sauerkraut in her purse to take to restaurants and social occasions to eat with his meat. The sauerkraut is healthy, but I'd surely not want to smell her purse... Yuck. What an idiot--actually both of them).

"whatever a Republican says, do the exact opposite and you will be fine".

The point being is I will not be taking nutritional advice from a guy that eats road kill and swims in shit water.

With tons of mayo based tartar sauce, chocolate milk shakes and McDonald's quarter pounders are all safe to eat now.

I avoid dairy.

I get calcium and protein from healthier
sources.

And the key is to go organic in every way.

So far so good.
