Trump says the US 'shouldn't even have an election' in 2026 because of all his accomplishments

Source: The Independent

Thursday 15 January 2026 14:20 EST

President Donald Trump told Reuters the U.S. should not have an election later this year because of his accomplishments in office.

In a 30-minute interview with the outlet, Trump said he had accomplished so much in office that “when you think of it, we shouldn't even have an election” in 2026. Trump also expressed frustration that the Republican Party could lose control of the House of Representatives or Senate in the upcoming midterms, according to the outlet.

“It's some deep psychological thing, but when you win the presidency, you don't win the midterms,” Trump added.

Historical trends show that the president’s party typically loses seats in the House during midterm elections, according to Brookings. Recent polls have also shown that Democrats running for Congress currently have a modest advantage in the 2026 midterm elections, according to The New York Times’ poll aggregator.

This is no bullshit. He doesn't want to have elections because he knows the Republicans will loose the House, and possibly the Senate also.
This would make it hard for him to pursue his agenda....better to not have elections at all from his point of view.
Add to that his statements about invoking the insurrection act against demonstrators in Minnesota, and you've got a pretty good idea of his actual intentions.

Hopefully with all the efforts of The States, activists fighting voter disqualification, GOTV, white hat hackers keeping an eye on the tabulators etc - we will have a fair election in 2026; hopefully taking The House, and maybe The Senate.

Of course, Mother Narure could solve some of our delima before then.

Just imagine any single or cumulative events within the duration of just a day or week that can facilitate the suspension or obliteration of true, representative government.

Have we ever been more destined to loose our 250 year experiment than now? Bush Jr. couldn’t make it happen (or should we state Cheney couldn’t outright). However, what an unattractive specimen we’ve empowered to be our All American Dictator.

All your speeches and social media posts and transcripts of your meetings will be standard curriculum material in their training. Their professors will tell them they will probably never again see someone as disordered as you, which is entirely for the best.

massive tax cuts to the already wealthy

banned transgender people from everywhere

destroyed the nations health infrastructure

Who needs an election after all that?

before the latest effort to do even more in some of the red states (slowly being countered by Democrats doing and looking at ways to do the same in their blue states). But those already-gerrymandered red states planning to do more, are now actually weakening their solid red districts.

So it will be a coin toss on how that pans out and a lot will have to do with whether a (D) is on EVERY ballot in those new districts (many many red districts have had no (D)s running in them).

And if those rascally states insist on having them, all good MAGAts should show their displeasure by boycotting the election.
In fact, we shouldn’t have presidential elections either. And since they are run by the states, Red states can choose to not have presidential elections any more, and Blue states can keep having them. States rights, you know.
Of course, this changes the number of electoral votes it will take to win…..

Every time the president talks about not having elections, his authoritarian vision comes into sharper focus

Trump told Reuters this week, “When you think of it, we shouldn't even have an election.”

This wasn’t a one-off: He’s made similar comments too many times before, making his overt hostility toward democracy plain. www.ms.now/rachel-maddo...

Steve Benen (@stevebenen.com) 2026-01-15T16:33:40.462Z

https://www.ms.now/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/trump-muses-on-midterms-when-you-think-of-it-we-shouldnt-even-have-an-election

This week, the Republican raised a similar observation during an Oval Office interview with Reuters’ Steve Holland — but this time, Trump offered one additional thought. From the Reuters report:

The president expressed frustration that his Republican Party could lose control of the U.S. House of Representatives or the Senate in this year’s midterm elections, citing historical trends that have seen the party in power lose seats in the second year of a presidency.

‘It’s some deep psychological thing, but when you win the presidency, you don’t win the midterms,’ Trump said. He boasted that he had accomplished so much that ‘when you think of it, we shouldn’t even have an election
.’

Trump’s incessant focus on the historical pattern seems designed to avoid blame: If and when Republicans fare poorly, the president apparently wants to be able to say, “No one should blame me, this is what always happens.”.....

A year earlier, in the run-up to Election Day 2024, the then-candidate reflected on his professed popularity and asked, “So why are we having an election?”

Conservatives are likely to see the quote Trump offered to Reuters and shrug, brushing it off as a harmless aside. But throughout his career, he’s repeatedly rejected the idea that Americans can resolve their differences at the ballot box and asserted that he’d only accept election results that align with his hopes and expectations.

Every time he muses about the United States not having elections, his authoritarian vision comes into sharper focus.
