Trump has plan for instant strike back if Supreme Court rules against him: report

President Donald Trump has a plan for an instant strike back if the Supreme Court rules against his tariffs, according to a report Monday.
In an interview with The New York Times, the United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer Trump's top trade negotiator revealed that the president intends to impose tariffs no matter what. And even if the high court's ruling does not favor his current trade policies, he has readied actions to put levies in place to replace them "almost immediately."
Even if the Supreme Court rules his tariffs unconstitutional in its ruling, which could come as soon as Tuesday, Trump has plans to add new tariffs to start the next day and to respond to the problems the president has identified," Greer told The Times.
Trump has leaned on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a 1977 law, to justify his use of global tariffs issued on U.S. trade partners throughout his first year in office. The Supreme Court will determine if his authority could be revoked. The reality is the president is going to have tariffs as part of his trade policy going forward, Greer said.

(25 posts)If there is an election in 2028 and the Democrats win the Presidency they better not waffle on the retribution. They will need to fill up Guantanamo and throw away the keys. Better yet, open up a gulag in Greenland, with Norway's and Greenland's permission of course. Camp Polar Bear.

I know the Old Man's nonsensical behaviour over the last few days seems to obscure the fact that Norway has nothing to do with Greenland, but don't let him confuse you.
Don't let the crazy win!
Or maybe it was just a typo. I've been known to overreact sometimes.

(25 posts)Trump addressed his letter to Jonas Gahr Store, the PM of Norway and complained that his country did not give him the Nobel Peace Prize.
Dear Jonas, the president wrote to Norways prime minister, Jonas Gahr Støre.
Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS.....

(1,695 posts)The presidency, but the simple majority in the house and senate, and to really progress, they would need a Super Majority. Sadly
And, most people don't truly realize that it is the almost exclusively Pro Republican CORPORATIONS, that control the Republican Politicians.......The Republican Politicians are quite literally, the best Politicans that money can buy...(And do)
And, believe me, those Corporations have been having their way for decades, and they will not lose their immense power.
It was hard enough for FDR to introduce all the agencies, rules and regulations........It would be a long drawn out nightmare for the Dems to try to re-install all those regulatory agencies that Reagan, Cheney, and Trump's Republicans have already obliterated.
It will literally take decades of complete power to take the country back to Pre-Trump days. That is the with the stuff we DO know, and I am sure there is much that we DON'T know that has gone on by 2025 etc in the shadows...

(1,300 posts)if they are against this round of tariffs. They can narrowly rule based on this case alone or in personal and/or ideological interest rule outside the issues in this case (as they routinely do) to determine that there is no right for the president to unilaterally apply tariffs. The originalists on the court can rule that the 1970''s international emergency act is unconstitutional. A real international emergency can be determined by congress.

(51 posts)Because as they continue to hand over their own power, as well as the Legislative branchs power, to just the executive branch, at some point there wont be any need for them anymore.
This Judicial branch trend is the most self-defeating thing they could do.

This is 100% on all the Republicans in congress. They have the power but instead decide to allow Trump to tear the country down.
Well, as long as hes making the billionaires richer its all okay.

(7,972 posts)It is a tariff. It doesn't matter if it is rubber-stamped a levy. Sure, he will issue still another Executive Order but where is the legal framework for such an Executive Order? It is not in the Constitution. Besides, the Supreme Court decision should anticipate an end-run and cut it off at the pass.

But there are certain things that they are doing where they have chosen to "test" the veracity of the system after going all the way out on the limb without an "exit strategy" (e.g., the Abrego Garcia case). So we will see what they do here.
