The Trump administration must contend with the merits of a lawsuit aimed at reversing funding cuts for sanctuary cities, a San Francisco-based federal judge ruled on Tuesday.
In a chiding 31-page order, Senior U.S. District Judge William H. Orrick, a Barack Obama appointee, denied a motion to dismiss, which was filed by the federal government last summer.
The underlying lawsuit was filed in February 2025 and includes more than 15 cities and counties. The plaintiffs in the case have consistently won relief from the court throughout the proceedings beginning with a preliminary injunction last April.
