Trump Approves 'Emergency Declarations' for Several States for Winter Storm

Source: Newsweek

Published Jan 24, 2026 at 06:39 PM EST

President Donald Trump approved emergency funding for multiple states affected by this weekend's severe winter storm, he announced on Saturday.

“I have just approved Emergency Declarations for Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and West Virginia. We are working closely with FEMA, Governors, and State Emergency Management teams to ensure the safety of everybody,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Saturday afternoon. That followed a post earlier in the day when he announced similar approval for the declarations by South Carolina and Virginia.

Why It Matters

An emergency declaration from the president triggers federal support to affected states through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The agency can deploy resources—including supplies, personnel, and equipment—before and during the storm.

Ahead of this week's storm, the federal government placed nearly 30 search and rescue teams on standby and pre-positioned emergency supplies, including more than 7 million meals, 600,000 blankets and 300 generators, according to FEMA.

They won't see a dime and there isn't much left of FEMA as it has been in the process of being dismantled.

The size and scope of this storm is overwhelming.

How Maryland got in there is anyone's guess.

He lost Virginia in 2016, 2020, and 2024. It has a newly sworn in Democratic governor, lt. governor, and AG. Its House of Delegates is overwhelmingly Democratic and it has two Democratic Senators. The statei has begun the process that would shift its narrowly Democratic US House Delegation to one that has several more Democratic seats.

Folks sometimes say Virginia is "purple" --- it's not. It's become a blue state. The blip -- Youngkin's election in 2021 -- was due more to a poor selection of candidate by the Democrats.

Tell him he’s the greatest since sliced bread and his numbers are “through the roof”,

And he gladly signs it, not knowing what it really is
