"The Trump administration has moved to acquire industrial buildings in at least eight states. DHS bought two this month: one in Maryland for $102 million and another in Arizona for $70 million.
... ICE expects to hold between 1,500 and 10,000 detainees in each of these 23 warehouses at a time, according to documents and interviews. But some experts have warned that it will be difficult to bring the industrial buildings up to federal standards for detention facilities in the short time before ICE plans to begin housing people in them.
The expansion of ICEs detention system would help fulfill President Donald Trumps goal of deporting millions of people by creating a hub-and-spoke model capable of booking migrants into processing centers for a few weeks and then transporting them to large-scale facilities where they would await deportation.
Tricia McLaughlin, an assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, declined to answer questions about specific properties, or about whether they can be converted to meet standards, but said the agency has new funding to expand detention space to keep these criminals off American streets before they are removed for good from our communities.

(1,096 posts)On January 15, 2026 the Kansas City Council approved a five-year moratorium on the establishment of new, non-municipal detention centers, directly aimed at blocking the ICE project.
Someone thought ahead!

(5,187 posts)was in office over his supposed plans to use closed Walmarts as detention centers? Sometimes you have to wait awhile, but sooner or later Republicans will do every evil thing that they accused Democratic politicians of doing.
