Judge rejects Minnesota bid to block federal immigration agent surge

A federal judge on Saturday denied Minnesotas emergency request to halt a surge of federal immigration enforcement agents in the Twin Cities region.
U.S. District Judge Katherine Menendez said her ruling does not make a final determination on the states claim that the federal government has overstepped its authority. She also stressed the decision was not a ruling on the legality of specific actions taken by federal agents.
Menendez wrote that granting the injunction would harm the federal governments efforts to enforce federal immigration laws.
The Court must view plaintiffs claims through the lens of the specific legal framework they invoke, and, having done so, finds that plaintiffs have not met their burden, she wrote. The judge noted Minnesota officials did not explain how to draw a clear line between what is constitutionally permissible and what is not.

(13,315 posts)If they were, they would be obtaining warrants for arrest. Instead theyre sweeping people up based on skin color, imprisoning them, and only later finding out which ones are citizens whom they then release in other states with no money, no phone, and sometimes no clothes. How is that enforcing immigration law? ICE does not have a right to detain US citizens and imprison them.

(28,665 posts)That's no small thing... but there's an appellate court above her that has already overturned her on this issue... and a SCOTUS above that who she must know would not back her up.
What is she supposed to do? The state knew that they couldn't win this one. They filed it as a means of protest and to show that they opposed the administration's overreach.
