Supreme Court Allow New California Voting Map For Midterms

Source: Bloomberg News

The US Supreme Court cleared California to use its new congressional map that favors Democrats during this year's midterm election, giving the party a pathway to neutralize anticipated Republican gains in the House due to new districts in Texas.

The justices on Wednesday denied a request from the California Republican party and the US Department of Justice to prevent the state from using its new voter-approved map on the grounds that it was racially gerrymandered and therefore illegal. California leaders have maintained that the new map was drawn purely to counteract the Republican redistricting in Texas and that race was not a factor.

The court denied the request without explanation or any noted dissent.

After this Supreme Court allowed the Texas redistricting, there was no way for them to deny this without completely destroying the entire judicial branches credibility which they were already on that path.

The DOJ of course has shown just how completely corrupt they are under this administration.

Stick that up where the sun don't shine Abbott and Paxton, who have done nothing but hurt Texas.

Let’s give Governor Gavin Newsom a big round of applause 👏🏻. He was skilled enough to run the extra mile to accomplish this for the good people of Cali.

He refused to host a town hall in his district or meet with concerned residents and did NOTHING to help anyone in his district with issues such as the government shutdown, mass deportations, etc. instead parroting the Trump MAGA talking points on right-wing talk shows. He's introduced zero meaningful legislation.

His district now has more Dems than Reps, and at least 10 Dems are lining up to run against him. The party narrowly missed having enough votes for a pre-primary endorsement of San Diego Councilmember Marnie Von WIlpert, at around 68% but 70% is needed for a pre-primary endorsement. She is probably the leading contender, though Ammar Campa Najjar did a lot of votes when he ran against Issa before. However there are many decline to state voters in this district, and a lot of them, maybe most, skew conservative albeit with no allegiance to either party. So a moderate Dem might be the safer bet to oust Issa.

I would advise any candidate not to ignore issues of concern to San Diego's East County, which does have many moderate and Democrat voters, if they want to win. Most of the candidates don't live in EAst County--they're North County, coastal, or even Riverside County. To win this seat, they need to shore up votes from Dems and moderate independents in East County, which is doable if they don't shoot themselves in the foot with talking points that will alienate small business people, farmers, rural and suburban voters, tribes, etc. Don't talk up building high rises everywhere as the answer to the housing crisis, support the dreaded mileage tax or talk up stringent gun control. Focus on inflation soaring, farm workers getting deported, ICE abuses against immigrants and even citizens, and DO talk about how Issa's idol Trump has sought to sell off public lands and allow road building in national forests (Cleveland National Forest is in this district still, I think), and DO talk about people losing fire insurance while Trump is slashing funds for firefighting and trying to eliminate FEMA that has helped many in East County--thousands lost homes in the 2003 and 2007 firestorms. Talk about Issa's silence as Trump's administration destroys or defies nearly every Constitutional right--including the 1st and 2nd amendment (free speech/press and right to bear arms) and amendments that protect us from unreasonable search and seizure, etc. Talk about Issa doing nothing about the dangerous El Capitan Dam,voting against infrastructure funding. With the possible exception of immigration, which draws mixed emotions out here, those others are sure winning talking points for anyone wanting to win many votes in this district. If anyone running out here wants a private conversation, PM me. I know the East County area and its issues very well.

I guess they couldn't think of a way to slice it any finer.

And the big picture is that the red states are already near max gerrymander. If they go any farther, they stand to lose "safe" seats. But places like California, Maryland, and Virginia have good room to gerrymander at much lower risk.

The high court previously approved Texas’ GOP-friendly map, which California’s Proposition 50 sought to counter.

The Supreme Court rejected an emergency appeal from Republicans to halt California’s congressional map, which was passed in response to Texas’ Republican-friendly effort, launched at President Donald Trump’s urging ahead of the November midterm elections.

The high court rejection came Wednesday in an unexplained order with no justices noting dissent.

In December, the Supreme Court approved Texas’ map on the grounds that it was motivated by partisan considerations, which the court has permitted, and not by unlawful racial considerations. When the court sided with Texas, it also seemed to cite California’s effort approvingly. Justice Samuel Alito wrote in a concurring opinion that “the impetus for the adoption of the Texas map (like the map subsequently adopted in California) was partisan advantage pure and simple.”

A divided lower-court panel cited the Supreme Court order in the Texas case when it rejected a GOP challenge to California’s map. Republicans appealed to the justices, leading to Wednesday’s order.

… that the Supreme Court upheld the gerrymander.

These guys are evil, but not dumb. They could have made this exact same map earlier in the decade. Do you know why they didn’t?

It wasn’t in their best interests.

The old map pretty much guaranteed that they would control the government. Yes, a few Democrats could get elected, but they would be inconsequential. The Republicans knew the smart plan was to allow some Democrat wins in exchange for making the Republican districts solidly red.

Now, however… many of the districts are pink, not red. Republicans now have an advantage in the single digits, not double digits. They probably will win, but not certainly. If the Republican voters don’t show up, or the Democratic voters are enthusiastic, the map on that following Wednesday will look completely different.

Everything Trump touches dies.
