Judge calls Trump administration's push for states' voter information 'chilling'

A judge on Thursday released his written opinion rejecting the federal government’s attempt to obtain Oregon’s unredacted voter rolls, calling its motives and claims “troubling” and “chilling.”

It built on U.S. District Judge Mustafa T. Kasubhai’s ruling from the bench last week.


“The Constitution specifically left the regulation and administration of elections to the states, understanding that states are in the best position to do so. While the Constitution provides for Congress to preempt the role of the states in elections, Congress has only done so in limited ways,” Kasubhai wrote in the 26-page opinion.

Kasbuhai said President Donald Trump administration’s attempt to compel Oregon to turn over highly personal information on its voters defied the law. The federal government sought the release of full dates of birth, driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers...............
