Trump-Appointed FCC Chairman Calls on TV Networks to Pledge to Air 'Patriotic, Pro-America Content' for U.S.'s 250th Bir

Source: Variety

Birthday

Brendan Carr, the Trump-appointed chair of the FCC, wants TV broadcasters to rally around the American flag in celebration of the U.S.’s 250th anniversary this year — suggesting that, for example, local stations could start “each broadcast day” with “The Star-Spangled Banner” or Pledge of Allegiance.

On Friday, Carr announced the Pledge America Campaign, which he framed as part of the White House’s Salute to America 250 Task Force agenda, which “invites citizens to have a renewed love of American history, experience the beauty of our country, and ignite a spirit of adventure and innovation that will raise our nation to new heights over the next 250 years.”

I remember broadcast networks used to do this, back when we had the cute loopy UHF antennae and people pretended to fix the reception by smacking the TV on its wooden outer chassis. You used to have to get off your ass to change the channel or adjust the audio volume playing through a single 3" speaker. At midnight they'd play the anthem and go to test patterns before ending the broadcast and then you got static until around 5am when they anthemed again and went to a news show. Are we bringing back the "good old days" thanks to Mr. Carr?

All broadcast outlets would be required to show 24 hours of patriotic movies. My choices include, in no particular order:

1. The Great Dictator (Chaplin)
2. Bananas (Marx Brothers)
3. Casablanca (Bogey and Bergman)
4. All the King's Men (Crawford)
5. Schindler's List (Hanks)
6. Sophie's Choice (Streep)
7. Schindler's List (Neeson)
8. The Longest Day (Wayne, Fonda, Mitchum)
9. Seven Days in May (Fonda)
10. The Manchurian Candidate (Sinatra)
11. Dr. Strangelove (Sellers)

AND OF COURSE!!!

12. Downfall (Ganz)

Broadcast TV goes 24 hours now, although the late night material tends to be local or paid programming without a large audience. But there's no magic instant in the morning when the test pattern goes away and it's time for a program.

From the 5th Amendment these words: "No person shall be …………... deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."

The 14th Amendment: "No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same."

broadcasters would begin and end the day with this announcement.

"That concludes our broadcast day. [Station Name] is a service of [Company Name]. We will return with [Morning Show Name] tomorrow morning at [Time]. From all of us here at the station, have a wonderful night. This is [Station Name] signing off."

followed by the Star-Spangled Banner especially when the station would power off overnight.

Now that most, if not all, stations run 24 hours a day, this convention has fallen to the wayside.

I am not surprised that the Trump administration is pushing this as this was the norm back in the 1950s.

everything that was ever good about this country and then they expect us to feel patriotic? I remember the bicentennial. No one told us what to feel, or the TV channels what to broadcast.

We were not long out of Vietnam and Watergate, and Civil Rights legislation was only about a decade behind us, so we had a lot of negative feelings, but I doubt they were even half as negative as we feel this year.

Asshole.

Also they could superimpose a picture of Dump humping the flag at the same time.
