FBI joins manhunt for carjacker who fatally shot good Samaritan
The FBI has joined New Orleans investigators in their hunt for a carjacker who shot a good Samaritan who then died in front of his young sons, police said Thursday.
"Agents contacted New Orleans police yesterday to offer their help, and detectives accepted the offer because of all the FBI brings to the table," a New Orleans police statement said.
Police provided further details of Wednesday's shooting, saying Harry "Mike" Ainsworth, 44, was shot in the chest after he jumped on a vehicle's hood to help a woman being carjacked.
After being shot by the carjacker, Ainsworth "ran a few feet from the car, collapsed in someone's front yard and died on the scene," the police statement said.

(7,601 posts)This was terrible...he was at the bus stop with his two sons and went to the aid of a woman being carjacked. He jumped on the hood after a struggle and was shot.

(15,189 posts)The thug told the woman to get out of the car. It's not like he was taking her hostage. It's a shame the guy died especially in front of his kids, over a car.

(10,138 posts)that the thug was not going to shoot the owner anyway. That is certainly not a safe assumption.

When I was a kid I was in a drugstore with my aunt -- I was playing around in toy section while she was at the register right next to the door. A shoplifter was making a dash for the door, someone cried out "STOP HIM" and my aunt who was in her 50s then, tried to stand in the way and block the door and the thief bowled her over as he ran away...She was bruised, but OK
My aunt would never usually try something like that, but it's human nature to do something when there's that adrenaline surge and only a split-second to decide on action/inaction...
