Trump Administration Demands Reddit Reveal Identity of User Who Criticized ICE

The Trump administration has ordered Reddit to provide personal information on one of its users who criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement, The Intercept reported on Friday. Reddit has until April 14 to provide the data. Attorneys for the user say their clients posts and their anonymity are clearly protected by the First Amendment.
On March 4, an ICE agent in Fairfax, Virginia sent a request to Reddit seeking information on the user, referred to as John Doe. To compel compliance, ICE slapped the social media behemoth with an administrative subpoena, which does not require approval from a judge.
Failure to comply with this summons will render you liable to proceedings in a U.S. District Court to enforce compliance with this summons as well as other sanctions, the request stated. You are requested not to disclose the existence of this summons for an indefinite period of time. Any such disclosure will impede the investigation and thereby interfere with the enforcement of federal law.
The request sought a months worth of data on the user, but it did not specify what the agency found potentially actionable. Reddit informed Doe about the request two days later, prompting the person who lives in the Pacific Northwest to retain attorneys from the Civil Liberties Defense Center in Oregon. The users attorneys say nothing in their clients posting history points to illegal activity.

(108 posts)That is the point of the Donald administration's bluff. If there was a credible threat, then the DOJ could get a judge to issue a subpoena. Compliance in advance is their ask.

(13,610 posts)One of the primary appeals of Reddit is user anonymity. Theyve already pissed off a lot of users by disallowing VPN-shielded logins. If they go so far as to cough up a users identity to the Pedo administration, they can watch the whole thing go down the drain.

(22,677 posts)I kniw a lot of people deride Reddit as being a cesspool, but that's a gross oversimplification, imo. There may be skme garbage subreddits out there, but there are also many, many well run subreddits that are a pleasure to use. I would hate to see anything endanger that. Reddit is extremely diverse, and that's one of the best things about it.
Pinback
(13,610 posts)Good moderators and less tolerance of abusive behavior overall have made a big difference. People sometimes like to criticize the old Reddit, or their impression of the current Reddit based on second-hand reports, without experiencing it in its current state for themselves.
Im by no means saying Reddit is perfect, or even as good as it should be. But as an occasional user, I find the experience overall helpful and positive.
My biggest complaint is that theres a fair amount of silliness that you have to filter out (although, to be honest, some of that is part of the fun sometimes). And I couldnt care less about some of the relationship advice threads and other personal drama reveals. I hide or block those most of the time. And, more and more, there are posts that seem to be bot-generated but the community tends to sniff those out and alert others to ignore them.
I also tend to stick to hobby groups most of the time, and when I do scan the political threads, most of them reflect a progressive viewpoint. (But I dont visit the conservative forums, and right-wingers usually dont get much traction in the mainstream news and politics subgroups.)

This has continued to expand over the past 80 years, affecting medicines such as tetracyclines, macrolides (including azithromycin), sulphonamides and trimethoprim combinations and, more recently, quinolones. In many countries, ciprofloxacin resistance is exceedingly high, azithromycin resistance is increasing and resistance or decreased susceptibility to cefixime and ceftriaxone continue to emerge.
The extensively drug-resistant gonorrhoea with high-level resistance to the current recommended treatment for gonorrhoea (ceftriaxone) but also including resistance to penicillin, sulphonamides, tetracycline, fluoroquinolones and macrolides (including azithromycin) are called gonorrhoea superbugs or super gonorrhoea."... (22,677 posts)It's not a question of being able to diagnose him (a blood test is needed for that anyway). It's a matter of a few basic facts, all of which are readily available on the internet:
1. Syphilis is easily diagnosable with a simple blood test and has been 100% curable since the mid 1940s (basically Trump's entire life).
2. As a result of the above, tertiary syphilis (the final, most advanced stage of the disease) has become extremely rare in industrialized countries. At one time, it was deadly, but it is now virtually unheard of in people with ready access to half decent medical care.
3. A person has to go untreated for years, if not decades, for syphilis to reachan advanced stage. The possibility of this happening to someone in Schlump's position (i.e. wealthy and with good medical care at his fingertips) in this day and age seems wildly unlikely to me.
I don't understand why this rumor still persist. It needs to die once and for all. Trump almost certainly has frontotemporal dementia and congestive heart disease. There's no need to resort to something as exotic and unlikely as tertiary syphilis to explain his condition.

Thinking about it, I can see Trump squaring up against the Snarky Queen Bee type, since that is the essence of his personality. It would be a losing battle, of course, because he is on the downward slope in terms of looks, charisma and influence.

That's apart from the thousands of niche interest groups, everything from hobbies to sexuality.
Of course, Reddit has money for lawyers, which would likely wipe out progressive boards hosted by individuals or small groups.

sites/computer servers are just about all based in foreign countries. Im willing to bet those
platforms such as MAGANationX not only have Musk but Russian backing. Just like Trumps
degree from Wharton it is phony.
From NPR
A new feature rolled out on the social media platform X has set off waves of finger-pointing by suggesting that many account holders may not be physically located where users assume they are. Late last week, X, which is owned by Elon Musk, added more information to most accounts, including some that could provide clues on where the account user is located.
Seeming inconsistencies quickly surfaced. An account called @MAGANationX that describes itself as a "Patriot Voice for We The People" is labelled as "based in Eastern Europe (Non-EU)." The handle @American was "Based in Pakistan." An account used by a person who identifies as a journalist in Gaza now says it's "Based in" Poland and "Connected via" an app in the U.K. That may mean various things, including that the account was registered in the U.K. So far, X has not provided a definition of the terms.

Rage farming
It's possible that some of the accounts may indeed be people overseas pretending to be, or implying they are, Americans, said Renée DiResta, an associate research professor at Georgetown University who studies social media platforms. She said their motivation is largely financial.
"It's just a really easy way to generate rage - generate clicks in this case, generate direct monetization. That's something that we've seen on all different platforms for a very long time now. "

(11,846 posts)law enforcement agencies at various levels in the US routinely purchase or demand and get info from all the major social media platforms.
Given how reliant we've become on 'net-based communications from social media to email to cell phone calls, imho the Supreme Court made a grave error when it held that searched of those communications unlike those via the USPS and land line telephones would not require warrants.
