US forces board a sanctioned oil tanker in the Indian Ocean, the Pentagon says

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. forces have boarded an oil tanker previously sanctioned for smuggling Iranian crude oil in Asia, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

In a social media post, the Pentagon said U.S. forces “conducted a right-of-visit maritime interdiction” and boarded the M/T Tifani “without incident.”

It’s the latest move in the U.S. war on Iran to stop any ship tied to Tehran or those suspected of carrying supplies that could help its government, from weapons and oil to metals and electronics. The announcement comes hours ahead of the expiration of an already tenuous ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, and as Pakistan attempts to broker talks between Washington and Tehran.

Ship-tracking data showed the Tifani was carrying oil in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday between Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The Pentagon described the Tifani as “stateless” despite it being a Botswana-flagged vessel. The announcement did not say precisely where or what time Tuesday the ship was boarded.

The kind with no safety inspections that runs with it's transponders off so it is a danger to other vessels at night and during low visibility?

And just cuz Trump is full of crap doesn't mean everything the US Navy says is.

Hard to see how that makes me a troll but whatever floats your boat, lol

And arguing with personal attacks instead of facts is always a sign of losing an argument on the internet.

How can a ship be flagged by that nation?

I looked it up many European countries have access to the sea via rivers like the Rhine or the Danube. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_recognising_the_Right_to_a_Flag_of_States_having_no_Sea-coast

A cargo ship would not legitimately be flagged in Botswana, as it is a landlocked country with no maritime ship registry. Ships flying the Botswana flag are using fraudulent, fake registration (ghost ships) as part of a "dark fleet" to evade international sanctions, hide illegal cargo, and avoid inspection

Some countries do not register commercial ships because they do not have any coastline and Botswana is one of those

A vessel cannot be registered in any country, as the chosen country must have a functioning vessel registry system.
