Momentum builds to reschedule White House Correspondents' Dinner after shooting

Source: CNN Business

PUBLISHED May 2, 2026, 3:42 PM ET

In the immediate aftermath of last week’s shooting outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, there was widespread skepticism about rescheduling it anytime soon. But attitudes have shifted in recent days, and the consensus is now that the dinner — which doubles as an awards ceremony and fundraiser — should be hosted again on principle, several White House correspondents told CNN.

The White House Correspondents’ Association board is “working through options” for a “rescheduled event,” this year’s president of the association, Weijia Jiang of CBS News, told members on Friday.

“As of today, we have not made any decisions,” she wrote in a memo obtained by CNN. “However, I am committed to ensuring our scholars and award winners receive the recognition that is rightfully theirs, and that an attack on free speech does not cancel our annual celebration of free speech and the other freedoms protected by the First Amendment.”

Numerous journalism organizations have reached out to Jiang to offer assistance. The April 25 shooting incident forced organizers to postpone the annual dinner, a black-tie affair attended by nearly 3,000 journalists, politicians, corporate executives and others.

At the bottom of tRump's ballroom or perhaps in his newly planned upgrade of the reflecting pool (but only if he attends in person and without water wings and scuba gear or a bullet proof vest).

than ax-handle polishers for Republicans but somehow always do their jobs when it comes to Democrats?

Olbermann is/was 100% correct on his venom and caustic attacks on the WHCD and the WHPC.

After the incident this will be very high visibility and he'll have the chance to gripe about the coverage it received, the 'need' for a taxpayer funded Epstein Dance Hall, and all of the rest of his usual grievances knowing that there will be massive coverage.

His narcissistic ego won't permit him to stay away.

He is still going to MaraLago. I'm sure he'll be doing campaign rallies. The rescheduled WHCD obviously won't be held in the ballroom.

I think these reporters should be ashamed going anywhere where Trump is treated as a normal person. Secondly, Trump saying the incident proves his need for a new ballroom is absurd. If it is going to take place, have it somewhere like a convention center where there are NO guests wandering around and no attached hotel.

It's the journalistic equivalent of mutual masturbation.

It is inconceivable that the orange fuckstick would be featured at an event to "honor and defend" free speech.

It's like inviting Elizabeth Taylor to talk about how to have a lasting marriage.

It's like inviting Jeffrey Dahmer to talk about the importance of locally sourced food.

In a sane world, this event would be swallowed in the sucking vortex of a blackhole, created by the stupidness of people thinking anyone gives one fuck about this worthless event.
