Tillis calls Comey 'biggest disappointment' but stands against 8647 indictment

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said Sunday that while he regrets supporting James Comey’s 2013 nomination, he does not agree with the Justice Department’s prosecution of the former FBI director.

“If this whole case is based on a picture in the sand of a North Carolina beach, it again makes no sense to me,” Tillis said.

A federal grand jury indicted Comey last month over an Instagram post featuring seashells arranged to spell “8647.” The phrase 86 is often used in restaurants to remove an item from a menu or an unruly patron from a bar, but President Donald Trump and his allies have claimed the photo is actually a threat against Trump.

“I can't find any evidence where 86 is used as a call for violence,” Tillis said Sunday. “It better be more than just the picture. There have to be facts and circumstances beyond that to convince me.”
