Nato ready to defend 'every inch' of territory as Russian drone hits Romania

Source: The Guardian

The Nato secretary general, Mark Rutte, has said the alliance is “ready to defend every inch” of its territory after a Russian drone hit an apartment building in Romania, a member state, during an overnight attack on neighbouring Ukraine.

The incident in Galați, which injured two people, prompted swift condemnation and the threat of repercussions.

“Russia’s reckless behaviour is a danger to us all,” Rutte wrote on social media after a call with the Romanian president, Nicuşor Dan. “I affirmed that Nato stands ready to defend every inch of allied territory.”

On Friday Dan convened an emergency meeting of the country’s supreme council of national defence and the foreign ministry summoned Russia’s ambassador.

The president of the European Commission says Russia's "war of aggression has crossed yet another line” and the EU stands in "full solidarity with Romania and its people".

Ursula von der Leyen says the incident occurred in a densely populated area of Romania, injuring civilians.

"As we continue strengthening our security and deterrence, especially on our Eastern border, we will keep increasing the pressure on Russia," she says in a post on X.

"We are preparing a 21st package of sanctions."

1. I think Belarusian boots going in from the North will also trigger a NATO response, especially from Poland

An actively engaged Belarus instead of a a passive pipeline proxy will really put Poland on edge IMO. Regardless, Putin is growing increasingly desperate and who knows what he's thinking. Lighting up the entire region with nukes on his way out is not out of the question. He's that nuts and has enough sycophants in place to do it. Scares the shit out of me.
Slava Ukraine!!

that they would jump in to help Ukraine, separate from NATO, if there was an attack by Belarus.

Action. Damn that Putin to hell.

I thought that was the point with drones…to always hit the target.

I think Putin fully realizes he cannot successfully attack, or even weaken or divide the EU as things currently stand. I just don't see an upside, an advantage or even temporary political leverage Putin gets from this. I'm guessing a local base commander on the Volga will be found presumptively guilty and immediately sacked after falling out a window.

6. I think it may have been a test to see if NATO would respond.

They need to do something new for Ukraine in response and perhaps move some troops to nearby countries.

10. And if Putin's pet POTUS will stay out, or go in with NATO, despite already diminished US munitions

Have always wondered if Trump going to war with Iran was all Netanyahu's idea or if Putin had a hand in it to wear down US resources so he could move into more European territories.

9. Well yes, they have to say that. But what are they actually going to do other than sanctions?

Until there's an invasion or major attack I think they are required to first engage diplomatically, try diplomacy, issue a warning, move more troops and equipment to Romania and Poland, etc.
