New law aims to ban 3D-printed guns after UnitedHealthcare CEO murder

Source: The Independent

Saturday 13 June 2026 10:30 EDT

New York is poised to enact a first-of-its-kind law that would mandate 3D printers sold for home and business use to incorporate technology preventing them from manufacturing firearms. The requirement, also under consideration in California, aims to counteract the latest method for producing untraceable "ghost guns" that have increasingly appeared in criminal investigations.

The proposed legislation, however, faces scrutiny regarding the efficacy of the blocking technology, alongside concerns about its potential impact on personal privacy and constitutional rights.

While approximately one-third of U.S. states have already moved to ban or regulate build-it-yourself firearms—which lack serial numbers and bypass mandatory background checks—New York's initiative is unique in its focus on the manufacturing equipment itself, rather than the individuals who produce the weapons.

This push for blocking technology in two of the nation's most populous states could establish new industry standards for 3D printers. It also presents a potential blueprint for other Democratic-led states seeking to bolster their gun regulations, many of which already prohibit certain semiautomatic weapons and permit the temporary confiscation of firearms from individuals deemed a threat.

Problem is with 3d printing you can just break the print down into parts. cstanleytech 9 hrs ago #14

The very first thing that crossed my mind. They don't even try to hide it or mask it anymore. SMDH

Hundreds of dead kids, and we just need teachers with guns. A rich peace of shit that caused untold suffering dies, and now we will do gun control. It’s so typically American at this point.

I don't like murder, but I'm not big on blocking tech either as it will no doubt be abused to block other things. And what you can use to scan then block, you can use to scan then charge a fee for stuff, or AI can ID whatever you scan and then report it... Report you.

You need reporting infrastructure to catch people before they use what they scan. If you don't know they scanned it, you won't be able to prevent much muder, just add extra minor possession with intent charges to a murder case.

And, it's tech. It will get hacked, modded, and sold quickly. AI will assist.

So, mixed feelings.

...there is zero chance that the technology could possibly prevent printing the various parts. Nor should we try.

.... what it is printing? This is pretty lame. Whoever is advocating this really does not know what they are doing, or else it's simply a performative proposal that isn't really expected to go anywhere.

And... Printed guns are not the problem. The guns you buy in the store are the problem.
