Temperatures on the ocean surface hit a record high in June, European scientists warned Wednesday, fueling fears of more dangerous heat waves this summer and fanning concerns over the escalating global climate crisis.
Two separate services under the European Unions Copernicus Earth observation program the Copernicus Climate Change Service and the Copernicus Marine Service announced they had both independently confirmed the record temperatures.
Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, warned that the rising temperatures could mark the beginning of a new phase.
With ocean temperatures at these levels and El Niño on the horizon, we are likely to see more temperature records fall in the coming months, Buontempo said in a statement Wednesday. El Niño is a naturally occurring climate cycle that sees the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean become warmer than usual for months at a time. The world could be heading into uncharted territory, Buontempo warned.

(10,248 posts)Smoke plumes from oil combustion have a serious climatic and environmental impact.Their fumes release immense quantities of carbon and particles that alter local weather patterns, in addition to degrading air quality.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂
emissions: The complete combustion of hydrocarbons emits significant volumes of CO₂, the main greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere.
Black smoke plumes contain high concentrations of black carbon. When suspended in the air, this pollutant absorbs solar radiation and warms the atmosphere. If it settles on ice caps or snow, it accelerates melting by reducing light reflection.
If the Russian aggression doesn't stop NOW, we're all doomed.

(55,764 posts)"Long-Term Climate Shifts: The shifting axisalso known as polar motiondistributes Earth's mass differently, which can subtly alter large-scale wind and rainfall patterns. Over long geological periods, these variations in tilt and distribution (related to the Milankovitch cycles) have been a primary driver of major global climate changes.Slowing Rotation & Longer Days: Studies by institutions like the ETH Zürich reveal that the melting of polar ice caps shifts water mass toward the equator, which acts like a spinning ice skater extending their arms, slowing down the planet's spin and making our days slightly longer.Adjusting Satellite Navigation: The physical wandering of the poles means that global positioning systems and astronomical telescopes must continuously adjust their calculations to remain accurate as the Earth's "wobble" changes the orientation of the planet in space.Understanding The Causes: The modern shifts in the rotation axis aren't just natural phenomena; they are driven directly by human activity. Research funded by NASA indicates that the melting of ice sheets, rising seas, and massive human extraction of groundwater are changing how the Earth balances itself."

(983 posts)Certainly the population will see a major reduction event in the near future. Also, the climate as we know will be substantially altered. However, life will adapt or die. Humans will persist in a drastically different ecosystem and social structure. The past several centuries have been climatological golden years. Now were paying the price of our continued ignorance. And the most ignorant faction is now in power.
