Paul Pelosi in hit-and-run in Napa County wine country, car left with major damage, authorities say

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ‘s husband was involved in a hit and run on Friday in California’s wine country that left one car with “major damage,” according to local authorities, who said that the 86-year-old could face misdemeanor charges for the collision.

Paul Pelosi was driving his brown convertible in Yountville, a small town in the heart of wine country in Napa County, when he struck a legally parked car on the side of the road, briefly stopped and then drove away, Napa County Sheriff’s department said in a news release on Saturday. There were no reported injuries.

A witness saw the collision and called 911. Shortly after, sheriff’s deputies then found Paul Pelosi with severe damage to the front of his car on a nearby road roughly one quarter of a mile away. The octogenarian told officers that he knew he hit something but wasn’t sure when or what caused the damage to his car.

Paul Pelosi didn’t have any alcohol in his system at the time of the crash, according to the statement. The sheriff’s department referred Paul Pelosi to the California Department of Motor Vehicles to initiate a process that will determine whether he is able to continue driving — a process that officials say is “common” for elderly drivers.

5. A shame but all elderly drivers go through this process. My dad the same thing, but in his case, they pulled

him over at the Lake of the Ozarks (some 50 miles away from home), and were nice enough to point him in the right direction to get home (2 lane roads in the middle of the Ozarks). My dad told me not to tell Mom, but I eventually did, fear of him causing harm to himself and/or others.

Every family have to go through this, some independence is valued, but how far does one go? Must consider others on the road besides yourselves.

6. There's a good chance he shouldn't be driving

but he was not done any favors by the hammer attack, so I guess I hold some sympathy because of that. Also, I am not about to make back seat driver judgements about the mental faculties of those I don't know well. The family needs to figure that out. There are plenty of younger rage and adrenaline filled idiot drivers I'd be more worried about (generally speaking) when I am out on the roads.

7. We had to take my moms car away from her after multiple

Times she hit curbs and things in parking lots thankfully not cars. She was driving 35 mph on freeway.

I had doctor talk to her because she was fighting me on it. She was early 90’s. Should have quit sooner.

I don't see why one couldn't create a digital, simulated road test and require licensees to pass it from time to time in order to renew their licenses.
