A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) responded that it was reassuring to see Republicans beginning to back off their threat to hold our economy hostage. Spokesman Adam Jentleson said the Senate would be happy to consider an increase in the debt ceiling that arrives without conditions. He did not address how the Senate would treat the Houses proposal to tie member pay to the passage of a budget.
What were saying is: Pass a budget. To the Senate. Well move the debt ceiling for the short term, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), the Houses third-ranking Republican, told reporters. Well see what your budget is. Well do our budget so we can put us on a path towards a balanced budget, he said.

This is almost exactly what Grover Norquist said the Republicans should do, ". . . have him (the President) on a rather short leash, you know, heres your allowance, come back next month."
Do they really think the American people, let alone the President, will put up with that kind of endless, petty infighting? Who is going to vote for the party that causes that kind of partisan obstructionism when the country so badly needs to move forward decisively on so many problems? This stupid strategy may prove to be the last straw for a very stupid, stupid party.

(8,821 posts)The tea party Republicans want to destroy our federal government. That is not opinion, they have said so in public many times. The last few years have proven the remainder of the of the Republican party will go along with them just to remain in their good graces. Nothing would make these government-haters happier than if they could make our national government look helpless, ineffectual and not worth the taxes we pay to it. Using a manufactured crisis like the debt ceiling gridlock to tie up funding for essential services and debt servicing is about the easiest way of reaching that goal.
You can bet your bottom dollar the GOP will ride this thing like birthday pony, and they will try to do so until six month before the 2014 elections. At that point they will try to hurriedly clean things up and take credit for any modest improvements which result.
