Birth control pills recalled, may not prevent pregnancy
Pfizer said on Tuesday it was recalling about a million packets of birth control pills in the United States because they may not contain enough contraceptive to prevent pregnancy.
"As a result of this packaging error, the daily regimen for these oral contraceptives may be incorrect and could leave women without adequate contraception, and at risk for unintended pregnancy," according to a Pfizer statement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.
Pfizer found that some packets of the drugs had too many active tablets, while others had too few.

The birth control pills posed no health threat to women, Pfizer said, but it urged consumers affected by the recall to "begin using a non-hormonal form of contraception immediately."
The drugmaker said the issue involved 14 lots of Lo/Ovral-28 tablets and 14 lots of Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets.

(1,712 posts)How many recalls have we had just in the last year, for everything from this to contamination?
K&R - hopefully this article will be noticed by a lot of women who haven't seen the news elsewhere.

Red herring can be tasty, but it's not very useful.

(25,183 posts)for Big Pharma to tell us to be good little American boys and girls, and pay full bore rip prices at Walgreen's and CVS for their marked up drugs, because if we use those awful Canadian pharmacies, we'll be getting substandard quality drugs that way. Then they screw up their own quality control processes to in effect sell placebo birth control pills through that domestic marketing chain, that they're telling us is so safe and secure.
Is that enough sauce to make the herring palatable?

BULLS***! don't blame this on one of your workers that is already underpaid and overworked!
"Pfizer found that some packets of the drugs had too many active tablets, while others had too few"
For the amount of cash we have to pay for anything that comes from pfizer, any one pill should contain the EXACT amount of whatever that any other pill does. if this is pfizer quality control, its pathetic!
its stuff like this that sends my blood pressure through the roof!

(8,830 posts)pills in the packet that are taken during that part of the cycle where the hormone is not needed. There are generally 5 or so 'placebo' pills to round out the month. That's been a standard practice for a very long time and designed to make it easier for women taking the pills. They take one every day, instead of having to remember to stop and start again.
It's been a while since I've seen birth control pills, but I thought they made the placebo pills in a different color so they wouldn't be confused with the real ones.
