Hardline Arizona Sheriff Suffers Broken Shoulder in Fall,

Source: nyt/reuters

A controversial 80-year-old Arizona lawman, who styles himself as America's toughest sheriff and is known for targeting illegal immigrants, broke his left shoulder on Thursday after taking a spill in downtown Phoenix, authorities said.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was being treated for the shoulder fracture at a local hospital and will not require surgery, said sheriff's spokeswoman Lisa Allen. It was not clear if he will remain overnight.

Even now, though bullies on auto-pilot still mistake me for an easy mark, one of the worst I ever met (a local bus driver) nearly pees his pants when he sees me. Otherwise he would've killed me already like he threatened to do. I told him I'd take the pins out of his doll if he'd behave, and now the idiot thinks I'm a witch!

One time when he got out of the bus and stood waiting for people to get off, he looked up and saw me, the last passenger, standing on the steps and he jumped backward with a sharp cry. Almost fell. I wish he had. So the next time I saw him before he saw me, I pinched his jacket sleeve and told him I was collecting cooties to make an impotence spell with. He pretty much stays out of my way now.

However, with all due respect, allow me to suggest that humane people can indeed take delight in an evil man's misfortune. The only difference between Hitler and Arpaio is geography and generation. Whether I really should rejoice and dance on the man's grave (even if in symbolic anticipation) may be up for argument; but I'll tell you true, abuse enough tends to inactivate the tear glands. I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone. When my rotator cuff tore I swore that I'd rather have a root canal without anesthesia, and I meant it. A few years later my other shoulder "froze" and they had to literally jerk it loose; yes, I was anesthetized for the procedure, but when I woke up it became evident to everyone within hollering distance that I'd been raised by a sailor. Shoulder injuries are excrutiating!

In Arpaio's case, the pain is likely to make him nastier than he usually is. Much as I really don't wish him ill, I mostly wish for his speedy recovery for the sake of those around him.

And I'll bet the line would stretch across 3 states at least. That unspeakable creature used to pick up unaccompanied little brown children walking to grade school and have them dumped in Tijuana to try to find their parents on their own if they could. I hope when he does die that Cesar Chavez gets a whack at him before final sentencing.

Like Rush, there are absolutely too many skeletons in his closet to allow a run for bigger office. Maybe he's achieved a balance of terror with his opponents, who might be too cautious to tackle him if he stays localized but would if he threatened to spread. I personally think (along with many others) that that's what really happened to Huey Long. Even one of his close relatives, Julian, whom I knew, believed FDR or at least one of his people was behind the assassination. Huey was brilliant, manipulative, and evil to the core. At least according to Julian. No love lost there. Under the circumstances, though, it could've been Julian himself. We'll never know.

It would've been catastrophic. Huey Long showed many sociopathic tendencies, and he was brilliant and eloquent enough to get away with it. He would've been our Hitler-Mussolini combined. For instance, when he went to the state legislature for highway funds, they only gave him a pittance. So he took the money and spread it all over the state in one-mile increments so everybody could experience the luxury first hand, if only for a short distance. The next time he asked for highway funds, the voters backed him and he got all he wanted.

Despite the good things Long did, he was such a dictator that nobody could get or keep a job in Louisiana during his time w/o his approval. He ruled that state with an iron fist and would've done the same with the whole country, given the chance. And crooked? As a dog's hind leg.
