Fox News Anchor Shouts Down Criticism Of Ryan Budget

Source: Think Progress

Fox News host Bill Hemmer tried to shout down Rep. Chris Van Hollen’s (D-MD) criticism of the GOP budget on Tuesday morning by loudly reading from Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) editorial promoting the newly-released Republican plan.

Hemmer dismissed Van Hollen’s claims that Ryan’s proposal would benefit the richest Americans while severely underfunding programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and food stamps as “talking points” and claimed that the plan would make the government “healthier.”

Then, as Van Hollen explained that steep cuts in spending would undermine job growth, Hemmer proceeded to angrily read from Ryan’s Wall Street Journal opinion piece.

At the end of the contentious segment, Van Hollen criticized Hemmer, saying, “reading a Wall Street Journal article by Paul Ryan on the air, I mean, I don’t see how that is a fair and balanced approach, but I appreciate you being honest.”

11. That's the mistake Van Hollen made; just by appearing on Fox, he is assuming they are legitimate.

If Fox were left to just vomit out their message and Democrats stayed away, they would be seen for what they are. no more than dogs barking in an alley.

Do they really think they're going to be able to get to speak through the lies against the person who controls the mic? And even when they do roundly debunk the person, the only people watching are the ones who say to themselves 'Who cares what this socialist liberal thinks or says?'

7. Before Faux, HEMMER seemed to be inoffensive & nondescript. They go to Faux to BE somebody.

Look at the career paths of all of them: Flunked out of the real networks - O'LOOFAH, STOESSEL, Bernie GOLDDIGGER, the Faux/Friends sports jerk who was LETTERMAN's intern... many more, then plus the Faux-originals who are Never-Weres to begin with. It's O'LOOFAH's own niche to recycle losers - CAROLLA, Dennis MILLER...

9. To go on Fox or to not go on Fox

that is the question.

Fox uses almost every segment to try and make republicans look good and Dems look bad. They ask biased questions and then fight the Dem over whatever their answer may be.

Since the election they have seemingly gotten even worse with this stuff as they don't even try to pretend to be polite to left leaning guests.

If Dems don't go on they are free to spew their propaganda without a response but if they do go on they face what Hollen went through.

I think they shouldn't bother going on there. Any Dem elected official or Dem policy person and/or celebrity. Stay off of Fox News! The audience is not going to vote Dem anyway so why bother?

You're right that the vast majority of the audience won't vote Dem either way, but there might be a few who can be persuaded even among the Faux regular viewers. In addition, consider how often people report seeing Faux on publicly available televisions in bars, health clubs, and so forth. Some people who aren't Faux regulars will be viewing any particular segment that airs. Having someone get in at least a bit of counterpoint is better than letting a Faux host intone, "We invited several Democrats to come and try to explain this, but all declined."

I know that W wrecked our budget surplus and ran us into debt with a couple of those pesky things.
