Senate on record opposing use of chained cpi

Source: The Hill

The Senate voted Friday night to oppose cutting entitlement benefits for veterans using a new method of calculating inflation.

President Obama has put the new method, known as chained consumer price index, on the table in deficit talks with Republicans. Using it reduces entitlement benefits like Social Security over time and also raises revenues by reducing the value of tax breaks.

The vote on the amendment was by voice vote, so its usefulness in quantifying Senate opposition to the proposal is minimal. The amendment is non-binding because it is attached to the budget resolution, which does not have the force of law.

Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) sponsored the amendment.

..."sounds" like they did have a little discussion, took a voice vote, but nothing really concrete or solid stuck to anything.

Which translates, "Nothing to see here, just keep on moving." Right, we understand now. The subject keeps coming up and coming up and this only applied to veterans, no one else. Just Kabukki.

This amendment helps Seniors on Social Security by using a formula for COLA that Republicans wanted to get rid. The formula now used is somewhat fair but, does not take into account that we seniors pay for drugs that go up by as much as 10 to 15% every year. What is our Cola?? This year it was 1.7% The Republican plan would mean a BIG reduction in future years for reciprients. Even Obama offered to put the CHAINED CPI on the "TABLE" for negotiations. Thank goodness for these Senators. You need to get your facts straight before posting. BTW, why does this bother you when it comes to our vets, of which I happen to be one???

applied to vets. BTW, I also happen to be a vet, and nothing in my post indicated that it only bothered me when it comes to vets. That is a total red herring. Our COLA has been changed a lot over the last few years under the Bush Regime. Are you aware that the COLA's were changed to include the costs of an ipad? And that some of the basic food stuffs cost were omitted? You could save an awful lot of anger if you didn't read things into a statement that are not there.
