North Korea to Cut All Channels With South, as "War May Break Out Any Time"

Wed Mar 27, 2013 7:34am EDT

SEOUL (Reuters) - Reclusive North Korea is to cut the last channel of communications with the South because war could break out at "any moment," it said on Wednesday, days after warning the United States and South Korea of nuclear attack.

The move is the latest in a series of bellicose threats from North Korea in response to new U.N. sanctions imposed after its third nuclear test in February and to "hostile" military drills under way joining the United States and South Korea.

The North has already stopped responding to calls on the hotline to the U.S. military that supervises the heavily armed Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the Red Cross line that has been used by the governments of both sides.

Despite the shrill rhetoric, few believe North Korea, formally known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), will risk starting a full-out war.

If NK were to launch a preemptive nuclear strike, the entire world would be against them including China. They wouldn't last long.

I hope cooler heads prevail (especially in the US if responding to such an attack. Using nukes ourselves is not the answer).

I still think that this is a total bluff. They have none of the cards but want to appear strong anyways.

When your best friend is Dennis Rodman what do you expect? The spoiled child wanting attention analogy does not fit well for a good outcome and is used most often by those with no experience with children with emotional and psychological disorders. When a threat of a bank defaulting in Cyprus threatens the World economy what would happen when say Seoul is bombed? Outlaw States such as North Korea and Iran know full well their ability to garner attention is immense. Even if they do not throw a nuclear tantrum the closing of South Korea or in the case of Iran closing of the Strait of Hormuz would cause real pain that could not be ignored.

This mess was created and empowered by neo-cons "Axis of Evil" pronouncement will not go away easily. From my experience with children with a variety of emotional and behavioral disorders when cornered behavior does not deescalate. Try restraining a child in midst of a full tantrum to keep them from hurting themselves and others. When the tantrum is thrown by a nation that is armed the outcome cannot be good.

Yes, at some point North Korea's best defense by survivors will be plead insanity "We did not know what we were doing".

I'm trying to think of even one word in their illustrious title -- Democratic People's Republic -- that is reflective of how they actually manage that country. They've ignored all three.

Given a change in birth circumstances and life experiences any of us could be say North Koreans or list among those we hold disdain. Our Ape nature holds true to the culture whether we are Alpha leaders or followers. Non conformist tend to be either killed or held in disregard.

We claim to wage war for or to "defend our freedoms" and yet I remember a candidate Obama being criticized during a national debate because he wasn't wearing a flag lapel pin; the latest fashion accessory among politicians after 9/11 to prove their patriotism.

North Korea would be "justified" in invading South Korea if it believes the country has "weapons of mass destruction". I am sure that they are relying on intelligence every bit as accurate as Curve Ball.

Can't see how this would be illegal given the precedent.

BushCo wasn't a tenth as insane as this bunch, so I wouldn't be so sure they aren't serious.

to any Peace Treaty. China just opened up talks with South Korea in 1992. South Korea also sent over 300,000 troops to Vietnam during that conflict. It will be ironic if an active War does break out because the leader of South Korea was the father of the current South Korean president. It runs in the family on both sides. If you speak out against the South Korean Government also, it is a crime. Military service is not voluntary in that country either. Maybe the best solution for both sides is to get it over with since they don't respect each other. And I'm glad I'm not over there now. It is nothing but a proxy War and it want be a quick War like some people think unless some idiot decides to use nukes when they find out. If it happens, both peoples lose on the Korean peninsula.
