"University of Mobiles Cross Country Coach, who was near the finish line of the Boston Marathon when a series of explosions went off, said he thought it was odd there were bomb sniffing dogs at the start and finish lines.
"They kept making announcements to the participants do not worry, it's just a training exercise," Coach Ali Stevenson told Local 15.
Stevenson said he saw law enforcement spotters on the roofs at the start of the race. He's been in plenty of marathons in Chicago, D.C., Chicago, London and other major metropolitan areas but has never seen that level of security before.
"Evidently, I don't believe they were just having a training exercise," Stevenson said. "I think they must have had some sort of threat or suspicion called in."
CNN reports a state government official said there were no credible threats before the race.
Stevenson had just finished the marathon before the explosions. Stevenson said his wife had been sitting in one of the seating sections where an explosion went off, but thankfully she left her seat and was walking to meet up with him.
"We are just so thankful right now," Stevenson said."

(57,936 posts)I go to the train station in LA on an ordinary day and just may see bomb-sniffing or drug-sniffing (can you tell them apart by looking?) dogs.
Police/fire dogs, whatever they are, are not unusual in places that have really big crowds.
I've even seen them walking around inside trains. They may have just been at the start and finish lines for a training exercise.
Boston has a pretty effective government.
Big cities are on alert pretty much all the time.
The dogs could have been there due to a tip or some information, but again, that is speculation without much basis.
Very plausible given the current environment.
Are you sure they are bomb sniffing dogs? My husband has a service dog that is out in public a lot. I used to take my therapy dog to the school where I was a special ed teacher. A student started a rumor that he was a drug sniffing dog. It was interesting to see which students avoided him after that

I suppose it just goes to show how suspicious some people are these days.
