Boston Bombing Victim in Iconic Photo Helped Identify Attackers

Minutes before the bombs blew up in Boston, Jeff Bauman looked into the eyes of the man who tried to kill him.
Just before 3 p.m. on April 15, Bauman was waiting among the crowd for his girlfriend to cross the finish line at the Boston Marathon. A man wearing a cap, sunglasses and a black jacket over a hooded sweatshirt looked at Jeff, 27, and dropped a bag at his feet, his brother, Chris Bauman, said in an interview.
Two and a half minutes later, the bag exploded, tearing Jeffs legs apart. A picture of him in a wheelchair, bloodied and ashen, was broadcast around the world as he was rushed to Boston Medical Center. He lost both legs below the knee.
...................
While still in intensive care, Jeff Bauman gave the FBI a description of the man he saw, his brother said. Baumans information helped investigators narrow down whom to look for in hours of video of the attack, he said.

(16,254 posts)I wish Jeff a swift recovery. His life is changed forever. I hope he is given the opportunity to "walk" up to those who harmed him and show that he will live, while they will not.
For him to have the presence of mind to describe the man to the FBI, after what happened to his legs, is incredible. Bless him.

(2,286 posts)to make his college dream a reality. He certainly deserves it. Heck, if the college had any sense, they would have a donor underwrite a full ride scholarship for him. Great PR.

(1,245 posts)We knew about Carlos, now we can add Jeff to the list of hero's of the day as well.
And I think this photo (grisly as it is when seen in entirety ... it's NOT for the faint of heart) will eventually come to be seen as 'historic', right up there with the picture of the screaming naked asian boy with the gun to his head back in the day of the Vietnam Wars, and the like.
Best wishes Jeff from all of DU, Jeff ... we're all wishing you the best possible outcome in your recovery ...
