CINCINNATI (AP) Authorities say a high school student pulled out a gun and shot himself in a classroom at a Cincinnati area high school.
The Hamilton County sheriffs office says the youth was taken to a hospital with a self-inflicted wound. They say there apparently was no threat to other students at La Salle High School, a private school west of Cincinnati.
A shot was reported at the school Monday morning at around 9 a.m. The school was put in lockdown until police confirmed there was no active shooter.
A school official is urging prayers for the student, but says no other information will be released about him.

I taught in a high school for over 27 years. I saw a lot, but never saw this. I can't imagine what the others in that classroom are thinking now. Prayers to all involved.

(1,009 posts)would have to shoot himself first before the student shot himself.
(Only a good guy with a gun committing suicide will stop a bad gun with a gun committing suicide, or some weird analysis like that.)

(1,113 posts)Information states LaSalle is a all boys Catholic high school in a working class suburb of Cincinnati. Sounds like a mental health issue, he tried to commit suicide. A high school kid. Sad.

(6,635 posts)the Gungeoneers, suicides don't count as gun violence because he would have found another way if he didn't have access to a gun.
So please don't blame the system that gave him easy access to a gun, but rather blame those who would have made it harder to choose a gun rather than a rope, or a high building, or a razor, or any other method that would have required pain and fear, and an opportunity to reconsider.
Suicide by gun is the preferred method, and is almost always successful. That's the American way, and what the Second Amendment guarantees.

His name has not as yet been released.
There are no metal detectors at the school, and students are permitted to carry backpacks.
Edit: correct mispelling.

From 1995 to 2005, the rate of suicide among 20 to 24 year-old boys was 20.7 suicides per 100,000, while the rate for girls was just 3.5 per 100,000. Among 15 to 19 year olds, the rates were 12.5 per 100,000 for boys and 2.8 per 100,000 for girls.
And the difference between the gender suicide rates is rising. "In 1933 the young male suicide rate was 1.54 times higher than for young females. In 2005 the male rate was 4.63 times higher than the female rate," Kleinfeld said.
In general, suicide is a problem that is downplayed in our society, experts say. In fact, suicides are more common than homicides. Overall, the U.S. murder rate is about 6 per 100,000; for suicides it's 10.8. It's higher among adult men than women.
"Theres no doubt that in relation to suicide, boys and young men are in a crisis," said Pollack. "And almost nothing has been done to remediate it from the gender perspective."
Two JR high school boys in my sons school killed themselves last year.
Of the guys I hung around with in high school, one-third of them have lost a son to suicide in the last five years.

(5,165 posts)It was locked in a gun safe.
The student, being intelligent, knew how and when he could obtain access to the safe. (Just as the Newtown CT student, also intelligent knew how to obtain access to his mother's gun safe.
Anyone who believes keeping guns in a gun safe is sufficient protection against a family member finding a way to get to the guns is fooling themselves. Maybe it will keep a toddler away from the guns, but not a sufficiently motivated person, who will watch and figure out t way. There really aren't too many well-kept secrets within a family - most family members know what is going on and how to get what they want, if not right now, then eventually.
I live in the county in which this tragedy took place. There is much upset at this turn of events.
