Afghanistan's Karzai urges closure of Guantanamo
May 2, 6:15 AM EDT
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai has pressed for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison as President Barack Obama mulls a renewed push before a reluctant U.S. Congress.
Karzai says he has "from the very beginning been a very strong supporter" of closing down the prison at the U.S. naval base in Cuba, a goal that has eluded Obama since he took office. Obama signed an executive order for its closure, but Congress has used its budgetary power to block detainees from being moved to the United States.
Karzai said during a visit to Denmark on Thursday that he also wants the release and return of Afghan prisoners in Guantanamo.
The Afghan leader was speaking on the third leg of a visit that also took him to Finland and Estonia.

(797 posts)And if so why doesnt he? as thats what he promised before becoming President.
Perhaps Presidents become privy to information not generally known to the public or
pre presidents.
As for Karzai? he's an ungrateful oaf and is probably going to live a very short life after America leaves Afghanistan,,

(797 posts)Its just that so many righties hang the fact that he promised to close Guantanamo and didnt when in reality its not closing had nothing to do with Obama.
I think Obama is one of the greatest presidents and if it werent for Republican obstructionism Obama would have the country in a much better place than it is now.

(25,183 posts)The only reason we still hear from him is that he thinks he needs to stuff a few more million into his Zurich account before pulling the plug on one of the biggest con jobs in world history. I really don't give a damn what he thinks about anything, whether I agree with him or not.
