McCain: Israeli strikes could force Obama to act on Syria
Source: JPost
Israel's air strikes on Syria could add pressure on the Obama administration to intervene in Syria, a key Republican said on Sunday, but the US government faces tough questions on how it can help without adding to the conflict.
Hours after Israeli jets bombed Syria on Sunday for the second time in 48 hours, several top US lawmakers voiced concern over the cascading uncertainty in the Middle East where a civil war has been raging in Syria for more than two years.
Republican Senator John McCain said the latest Israeli air strikes, described by a Western source as attacks on Iranian missiles bound for Lebanon's Hezbollah, will just put more pressure on the administration to act although President Barack Obama has said he has no plans to send ground troops to Syria.
"We need to have a game-changing action, and that is no American boots on the ground, establish a safe zone and to protect it and to supply weapons to the right people in Syria who are fighting, obviously, for the things we believe," McCain said on "Fox News Sunday."

(488 posts)Suspend all aid of all types to Israel until the Syrian situation is resolved. Tell Grampa Mcinane and Ms.Scarlett Graham to get a fainting couch built for two and a string of pearls big enough for both of them to clutch.

(616 posts)If John McCain thinks this is a good idea, then you know that it would be a disaster. We don't even know who the "good guys" are in this conflict.
Please speak out.
We can't afford another war, and American lives would inevitably. involved not to mention our money.
This is a crucial situation!

It's like I say, if McCain had won we wouldn't be talking about the money at all. We would be talking about our invasion and occupation of Iran and former Bush Supporters would now be McCain Supporters who now pounded their puds to Sister Sarah.

Frankly it is the PR Israel is publishing that says these strikes are against weapons set to be delivered to Hezbollah. They could simply taking advantage of the situation in an effort to depose of Assad. We need more concrete evidence before being sucked into still another war in the Middle East. Remember that Boston was pushback against our earlier invasions in that area. McCain is a tired old man saying foolish things.

(53,938 posts)As for the comment in your post, that isn't even remotely true as Israel has been involved in a number of conflicts in which the US was not involved, nor did a damn thing.
ETA: Oh, and more than likely, this was done with the full knowledge of the US government, and perhaps, even at its request.

(53,938 posts)The only ones wanting that are the far-right, and the far-left; though for very different reasons. Everyone else is fed up with all the war. The only way we will get involved is if Russia makes a bolder move (the cold war is not over, just thawed), which I also don't see happening because they are involved in their own misdeeds a little further north. When Iran withdraws it's hand from it's Syrian puppet, Assad will fall, and more chaos will ensue, but it will be more contained, with less spill over into neighboring countries. IMO, should the rebels succeed, it is a strong possibility Syria could cease to exist as it currently is, which will still be very bad for the region, but may settle a number of issues.

(28,581 posts)Between Syria and N Korea, I'm really nervous. As the mother of an airman, I know that part of the deal is that if he is called, he will go, but it's still frays the hell out of my nerves.

(53,938 posts)Remember, much of what we see is biased (right and left). There is also a shit-load we don't see. I have started reading right-left-center pieces and read between the lines, or rather, between the biases. I don't read enough on North Korea, but I don't think they are a real problem (just an uneducated guess).

(28,581 posts)Their leader is a nut, the people are completely brainwashed and their life's goal is a reunited Korea (under their rule), add in that the joint factory complex has been evacuated and Seoul is only 40 miles from the border......well, war rests on the whim of a young, crazy, power hungry young man who would love to accomplish what his father and grandfather could not. If he attacks S Korea we will defend it. With Syria we don't have to go in unless Syria fires on our allies, which I don't see them doing unless they are continuously provoked by strikes on their land. At some point they may fire back.... and then it could get nasty.
