Americans Down on Congress, OK With Own Representative

Source: Gallup

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans continue to express frustration with Congress: 16% approve of the job it is doing, essentially the same as in April.

This low level of approval for Congress, from a May 2-7 Gallup survey, is nothing new. Americans have held the nation's legislative branch in low regard for years now. Though not the worst on record -- which was 10%, recorded twice in 2012 -- Congress' approval rating now is far below the 33% average found since 1974. Seventy-nine percent currently say they disapprove.

...snip...

Although Americans overwhelmingly disapprove of the job Congress in general is doing, voters re-elect most members of Congress in every election. This phenomenon is partly explained by the finding that Americans have significantly more positive views of their own representative than they do of Congress overall.

About half (46%) of Americans say they approve of the job the representative from their own congressional district is doing. This is on the low end of what Gallup has found historically, although it hasn't asked this question often and not since 1992. From 1990-1992, Gallup asked Americans this question eight times, with approval ratings ranging from 49% to 66% and averaging 58%. In a lone 1977 reading, 55% of Americans approved of their congressional representative.

Everyone hates everyone else's Congressman. They're fine with their own.

A working class candidate doesn't wield the financial firepower of a corrupt businessman in office who gets kickbacks from his buddies in the form of campaign checks and gifts and other perks and access to his buddies' news networks to spread his propaganda. No, the working class Joe American has to wage war uphill.

No.I'm not.The guy who pretends to represent me,Rodney Davis,13th Cong.,District,Illinois,is a complete and total idiot and world class asshat. He campaigned, and won on repealing the ACA and seemed to imply in his ads that,if elected,he would accomplish this single handedly. That was his big issue.Of course that speaks as much about the cretins that vote in downstate Illinois as much as about congresscritter wadney.Since being sworn in to,hopefully, his only term,he's done nothing of any note. He's a smarmy, piss poor excuse of of an "adult" and a complete waste of oxygen.

No.I'm nowhere NEAR ok with my piece of shit.

That one is absolutely, without a doubt, true.

And by the way, every representative from my state sucks. Every single one.

who has been outspoken on gun control. She is also the Rep for Newtown. She has been outstanding, really. Especially with the
Newtown families. I am quite happy with my Senators too, Murphy and Blumenthal. Everyone should watch Chris Murphy's first ever Senate speech on CSpan about Newtown. I am lucky.

It should have read - Less than half.

Example - I detest Leonard Lance AND his Republican Cronies in Congress . . . so I'm with the other 54%.

Why nothing ever changes is that in order to live close to where I work - I have to live in NJ Horse Country. The people in my district are idiots that vote for this country club snob - because he's one of their own.

The Tea Farty, in their infinite stupidity, is not happy with Steve Chabot and may try to primary him next year. If they suckcede the Democrats could run Daffy Duck and he would stand a good chance on getting elected.

It's doing what it is supposed to do. Keep everyone involved. If others couldn't have their Congressman represent them, why should we have ours, the one of which we approve? Ours is there to keep the others from doing things we would not like.
