California accuses JPMorgan Chase of debt-collection abuses
Source: Los Angeles Times
California Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris has accused JPMorgan Chase & Co. of using fraudulent and unlawful debt-collection practices against some 100,000 credit card holders in the state.
In a lawsuit filed Thursday, Harris' office claims the major Wall Street bank employed abusive and illegal practices over at least three years.
Chase's use of illegal robo-signing was widespread, Harris' office alleges. The practice involved automatic signing of various documents -- some sworn -- without reviewing the paperwork or bank records.
"Sewer service" litigation against borrowers was also used by Chase, the suit alleges. The bank failed to even notify credit card holders it was taking them to court, while Chase claimed they had been notified as required by law, Harris' office claims.

(54,349 posts)I would fine JPMorgan ten times the amount of the dispute, give half to the victim, and put the other half in a fund to pay for legal representation for claims against JPMorgan in the future.
I once got a "bill" for $150,000 from some sleazy debt collector for some $1500 tax bill from the State of New York that I didn't even know about. I finally tracked down the office in NY that "couldn't find me," and cleared up the original amount. A cousin of mine in NYC, who is a judge on the tax court there, told me her husband had been harassed for months by the same debt collectors in a case of mistaken identity, and only the threat of City legal action finally convinced them to go seek the right guy. I was ready to tell them I put them in the same category as horse thieves, and was willing to consider imposing the same punishment horse thieves got in Texas 150 years ago. The City cleared it up before it came to that, but sanctioned thievery, whether by a bank like JPMorgan or by a sleazy debt collector claiming to represent a government agency makes my blood boil.

(15,205 posts)I have received an unacceptable number of calls from one of their auto-dialers ( I think that's what they're called ) when I shouldn't be receiving calls from them period. I have a payment due date of the 17th of every month, and this issue is discussed with one of their reps monthly..
Three calls yesterday morning between 8:55 to 10:20. I call this harassment.

(15,205 posts)They told me this yesterday, but the problem is when they try contacting you from other call centers...you'll get a number with the same prefix, but any possible 4 digit combination.
Canada? Damn, are they off!
