Jury convicts abortion provider Kermit Gosnell of murder
Source: Washington Post
PHILADELPHIA Abortion provider Kermit Gosnell was convicted Monday of three counts of first-degree murder for severing the spinal cords of infants born during abortions at his West Philadelphia clinic.
The trial now moves into a sentencing phase to decide whether Gosnell should receive the death penalty or face life in prison.
The verdicts were announced hours after the jurors informed the judge in the case that they were hung on two charges. . .

Abortion should remain safe and LEGAL. Gosnell broke the law, and if women aren't offered legal choice, you will see more of his ilk.

(32,640 posts)Warnings--from patients and their attorneys, a doctor at a Philadelphia hospital, women's health groups, pro-choice groups, and even an employee of the Philadelphia Department of Public Health--failed to prompt state and local authorities to investigate or take action against the clinic.
The officials could have shut him down.

(90,616 posts)That sonovabitch was a known butcher. Women became septic from his "care" -- any hospital that admitted such sick women should have known the cause and reported it.
Any health care clinic is subject to inspection. If I take my child to Urgent Care, Immedicenter, or the like, I should be assured that the facilities are sanitary, that the instruments are sterile, and that the practitioners are duly licensed and competent.
I live in the suburbs. If I lived in the inner city, why should I have to resort to a "clinic" that is filthy and more likely to kill than cure?
Likewise for anyone seeking medical care for any reason, including abortion. Gosnell's victims were poor and ignorant, and believed they had nowhere else to go. It IS the responsibility of the Department of Health to keep an eye on medical practitioners and their facilities.
The negligence of the authorities was criminal. Gosnell should have been shut down many years ago.
