LOS ANGELES (AP) — Popular psychologist, columnist, and television and film personality Joyce Brothers has died. She was 85.

Longtime publicist Sanford Brokaw says Brothers died Monday in New York City.

She was a pioneer of the television advice show.

Her celebrity took off after she entered a television quiz show called "The $64,000 Question." She became the only woman to ever win the show's top prize.

And her topic was boxing. That reminds me: College tournament again tonight on Jeopardy!, and I have to beat those whippersnappers yet again (except on pop culture - if it's after the '80s, I'm toast).

Her daughter and son in law live right here in Davenport, Iowa and both are hugely successful eye surgeons who have given back a LOT to the community. I believe it is because of Dr. Joyce's influence that they do these fine things.
I have actually eaten hamburgers with her at a backyard barbecue and she was just an ordinary type of person. And her and I had one thing in common; we both did not like onions. R.I.P. Dr. Joyce Brothers. A life well lived.

Producers of the $64,000 Question tried to bounce her off the show by giving her more and more obscure questions, but they couldn't get rid of her. Apparently she wasn't popular with the sponsor.

Here is a YouTube just uploaded showing clips from both the $64,000 Question and the spinoff the $64,000 Challenge:

Ann Landers spread that "If you're not a virgin you're worthless" crap and she had no mental health training.

Dr. Brothers was usually sensible. I'm sorry she's gone.

I read the newspaper (headlines, funnies, and advice) from the time I was a small kid in the 1950s. Their advice was pretty much in tune with the times -- and changed with the times. In fact, they started out sounding like my mother, and ended up far in advance of her. They were pretty broad-minded, all things considered. Of the two sisters, Ann Landers had the sharper tongue.

She was raving about how boys only want one thing, and when they get that thing, they drop you like a Kleenex. You're only good for one thing, your virginity, and then you are worthless. It was appalling. I believed that crap because nobody told me anything differently.

She repeated her "Boys are animals, girls must be virgins" crap in her columns. I guess Middle America ate up that double standard crap. This movie was supposed to tell us how to act on dates, I guess. She said to "go bowling, dancing, anything except making out. That's BAD."

Wish I'd gotten a message other than "We won't tell you anything about sex but we'll make you feel horribly guilty for having normal thoughts and feelings".

Dear Abby was always a lot more sensible than Ann.

I imagined her saying what she really thought: "I'm better than you because I was a virgin when I married and you weren't, you slut."

Ann was like a Republican--not interested in an issue until it affected her personally. In her case it was divorce. She thought divorce should be a last resort, until she got one and it changed her opinion. She married a guy who I think invented Presto cookers.

I graduated from high school in 1972. That woman's opinions really damaged me. But they were the opinions of a whole lot of other people. My parents never said anything to me about sex. The whole society conspired to not tell kids factual sex education back then.

1994. She was tiny-tiny-tiny and immaculately dressed. Very soft-spoken. I still clearly remember she was wearing Mary Jane shoes.
