Venezuelan opposition leader sued in Colombia
posted by Adriaan Alsema
May 16, 2013

Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles and Colombian former President Alvaro Uribe have been sued for trying to disrupt exports to Venezuela and destabilize their governments.

According to the plaintiff, Colombian lawyer Aurelio Jimenez, Capriles met with Uribe and the former president’s adviser Jose Obdulio Gaviria in November 2011 to plan a disruption of exports to Venezuela with the aim of destabilizing the government of Colombia’s neighbor to the east.

The Colombian and Venezuelan politicians subsequently approached Colombian exporters and Venezuelan importers to convince them to suspend trade and intentionally cause scarcity in supermarkets in Caracas, according to Jimenez.

The attorney’s claim has been supported by audio that was leaked to Colombian newscast CM& who published an article about the meeting on its website. The article and audio later disappeared from the news website. Venezuelan television station TeleSur does still have a copy of the audio made during the meeting.

In the audio, Uribe instructs Venezuelan opposition leader on how to deal with an upcoming visit to Caracas of current President Juan Manuel Santos.

122 replies, is it now? Hmm.

Lots of freemarketeers blaming price controls in that thread, but it sure looks like there's more to the story.

The farce of pretending the economic status quo does not defend itself when social movements and governments seek to change it in favor of people with less is a ludicrous one.

the claims are ROCK SOLID.

I bet they don't even need a TRIAL, right, Judi? I mean, if Maduro SAYS they did it, it HAS to be true, right?

Uribe, meeting that fine young man he says these
days he'd like to meet, sometime, Henrique Capriles.

On edit:

Catherina located video showing Capriles and Uribe in their meeting in 2011 in the Carlton Hotel in Bogota, and it was well publicized at the time, yet Uribe claims in the present he has never met Capriles.

Where does Maduro enter into this, anyway?

Chavez suspended trade with Colombia on at least two separate occasions causing significant disruption to the economy of both nations. I don't see any Chavez officials mentioned in that lawsuit. Sounds like someone is paying this attorney to blame Capriles and Uribe for Venezuela's problems.

We have no other choice but, out of dignity, to totally break our relations with our brother nation of Colombia," Chavez said as he hosted Argentine soccer idol Diego Maradona.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro said he had ordered the closing of Venezuela's embassy in Bogota and gave the Colombian mission 72 hours to leave. He said Caracas was considering other measures, such as suspending flights.

Chavez, who portrays himself as an anti-U.S. and anti-capitalist standard bearer in Latin America, faces an opposition challenge in September 26 legislative elections and has ramped up his rhetoric against perceived foes. Critics say he is trying to distract attention from economic and other woes.
