Angry mob pelts man thought to be sex attacker
By STEVEN K. PAULSON
Associated Press

DENVER (AP) -- Residents angry that police had not warned them about sex assaults of children took matters into their own hands, chasing down a man they thought was the attacker, pelting him with rocks and leaving him with a bloody face in Colorado, authorities said Monday.

Pueblo police later released the man because of lack of evidence, The Pueblo Chieftain reported.

Neighborhood residents were looking for a man suspected of two separate sexual acts when they got word that a man matching the description had been spotted, said Alex Pacheco, one of the pursuers.

The group confronted the man and he ran.

...well, that seems to be what it sounds like.

But, in the main article, noted the below:

"Pacheco told the newspaper that residents were canvassing the area looking for the man who committed the sex crimes during the past few months.

Police said the mob grew to about a half-dozen people as residents learned of the chase and joined in."

Six is a "MOB"?!?!

'The 54-year-old man accosted by the mob did not want to file charges against his pursuers, the chief said

"He said folks were reacting to a bad situation and he told the officer, `I don't want to go that route,'" Rummel said. "He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The name of the man was not released because no charges were filed. He agreed to give investigators a DNA sample so he could be ruled out as a suspect.
'

Sounds like he is being a good sport about it.

I support the action that was taken by citizens of Pueblo, There was a reason for this form of action. a recent sexual assault on two young girls where the accused perpetrator was given a TICKET!!!!! and released. This led to a major out cry. The police did respond quickly and the man was arrested and is now sitting in Jail waiting trial. I am glad that the man that was chased was not injured and seems to be cooperating with police to clear his name.

Let's leave aside the first point for a moment.

Of what, exactly, does this man need to clear his name?

Due the actions of the police in the past. I am glad that the man was not hurt, Yes I think that because he did match the description of the perp that clearing his name is important to him of all people. If I was that guy that would be the first thing I would want done. There would be a lot of people thinking him guilty with out any proof. So yes clear my name NOW.....

or "Pursuers surrounded him and punched him in the face, police Capt. Tom Rummel said." Both descriptions are from the link. Not sure if both things happened, or if there is confusion in the reporting.

Still, unless I'm misunderstanding something, he most certainly was injured.

Sure, the crowd took action...against the wrong guy!

That's precisely the danger of vigilante justice: a suspect is denied due process, and subjected to the emotions of the mob.

You support that?

for support is not the action but why the action. I am sorry for the over reach but the fact he should have been held an police called not hit or struck. Since I do not have a child living in that area as well as you, it would be hard to know how one would react.

Useless?, you maybe right.
The issue is why good honest people are driven to react. You do not agree. I am being honest I do not know if I would have not help chase him down. I have two children who work in law enforcement. I ask them what they thought both said that it should have done differently, staying inside the law. Citizens should be involved in helping police when they can, but not breaking the law. I still support the fact they tried to help an protect their neighborhood,

was the reason, It cost the city money every time they booked someone into county jail. So they were going to save money by issuing tickets instead of arrest for some offenders. The call was about as dumb a thing as I have ever heard.

A Pueblo man who reportedly stalked three juveniles and fondled one, was initially ticketed and released by police.
The incident occurred Thursday, but by Friday morning Wayne Anthony Arrona, 39, was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and attempted kidnapping. He is in Pueblo County jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
Upset parents sent emails to police and City Council late Thursday concerned how the situation was handled.
"We believe the only reason this guy is behind bars is because we wrote to council, and forced their hand," one mother said Monday. "We appreciate what they did, but we shouldn't have to request justice. I don't know why this wasn't taken seriously from the get-go."

A father in Pueblo says a sexual predator was set free because the jail was too full.

Tim McGettigan is outraged at how Pueblo police officers handled a sexual assault investigation that his daughter witnessed last Thursday. Police wrote the suspect, 39-year-old Wayne Arrona, a ticket for disorderly conduct and then set him free.

The Pueblo Police Department says the officer who wrote the ticket made a poor judgement call. The department is investigating how the case was handled.

It was supposed to be an afternoon stroll to the candy store and a trip to the playground for two teenage girls and a boy they were babysitting. But McGettigan says Arrona sexually assaulted his daughter's friend and tried to kidnap her.

"When we called the police on the night that they had released the prisoner to the streets, we asked why on earth would they do that and the response from the police was 'the jail house is full,'" MGettigan said.
